Please share a memory of Robert to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Robert Fitzwilliam Berford Jr., affectionately known as Bob or Berf to his friends and loved ones, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on January 27, 2025, in Grayling, Michigan. Born on July 27, 1941, in Detroit, Michigan to Robert and Katherine Berford. Bob's life was a testament to his loving nature, selfless spirit, and unique sense of humor that brought joy to everyone he knew.
Bob's journey began as one of three children in a vibrant household in Dearborn. His formative years were filled with the bustling energy of the city, which shaped his resilient character. After completing his education, Bob proudly graduated from Michigan State University with a Bachelor of Science degree, which laid the foundation for his future endeavors.
His commitment to service was evident early on when he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps Reserves. This was something he was so proud of. Bob served his country with honor, he was honorably discharged in 1970, carrying the values of discipline and loyalty throughout his life. Following his military service, Bob embarked on a fulfilling career with Ford Motor Company. His dedication and hard work were recognized by many, and upon his retirement in 1997, he left behind a legacy of achievements and friendships that endured long after his departure. He shared so many stories of all the fun times he had “working”.
Bob's interests were as varied as they were passionate. He was an avid player of pool, a sharp shooter at darts, and enjoyed the competitive spirit of volleyball. His love for the outdoors was evident in his joy for camping, hunting, fishing, and shooting guns. He was a collector of all things. Bob found solace and camaraderie in the simple pleasure of sharing a beer with friends at the local bar. These moments were the building blocks of countless memories that his friends will hold dear.
Family was the cornerstone of Bob's life. He is survived by his loving family members, including his daughters, Bethanne (Hamilton) Starr, Katrina Barton, Bobbi (Evan) Gusler. His sister Barbara (Bill) Rosselot and brother Doug (Linda) Berford. His grandchildren and great grandson.
Bob's role as a grandfather was one he embraced with every ounce of his being. Though distance separated him from many of his grandkids he loved them all dearly. He was especially close with Ethan who was the light of his eye. He was the very best papa.
Bob's love for his family was matched by his selfless nature. To know Bob was to experience his generosity firsthand, whether through his time, his support, or his uncanny ability to make anyone laugh. He could fix anything. He loved cutting wood from his yard. His cabin in the woods down the bumpy road was his place of serenity. His humor was a gift that lightened the hearts of those around him, and it is this laughter that will echo in the memories of all who had the pleasure of knowing him. So many memories along the way with travels to “up north”, the ranch, and camping.
In a life well-lived, Bob's impact was felt by many. His absence will be deeply felt by his family, his numerous friends, and the community that was fortunate enough to have been graced by his presence. Bob's legacy of love, laughter, and selflessness will continue to inspire those he has left behind.
As we say farewell to Robert Fitzwilliam Berford Jr., we celebrate a life lived to the fullest. His spirit, forever etched in the hearts of those he touched, will continue to guide and comfort us. Bob's journey on this earth may have concluded, but the stories, the laughter, and the love he shared will remain as vibrant and enduring as the man himself.
Bob's life will be honored in a private ceremony, as per his wishes. In the silent moments of remembrance, let us all find solace in the rich tapestry of memories he has left us and the unwavering love that defined his remarkable life. We love you Dad
