Obituary of James Durrance
Please share a memory of James to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
James "Jim" Durrance, a man cherished for his loving nature, friendliness, and handy skills, passed away peacefully on January 29, 2025, at Medilodge of Montrose. Born on April 14, 1946, in Detroit, Jim lived a full life marked by dedication to his family, a myriad of interests, and a career in residential maintenance that allowed him to touch the lives of many.
Jim was the beloved husband of the late Ruth Durrance, with whom he shared 49 years of marriage filled with love and companionship. He is survived by his daughters, Michelle Green (James), Renay Sowulewski (Dustan), and Ruth McAllister. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth, and his daughter, Dawn Durrance. Jim's legacy continues through his cherished grandchildren, Brittany Durrance, Automn McGuckin, Gabrielle Hehrer (Richard), Nicholas Young, Alyssa Davidson, Jacob Jones, Briley McAllister, and Burrell McAllister. His great-grandchildren, Brycen Durrance, Haidyn McGuckin, Ivan Davidson, Riley Durrance, Cohen Redmond, Rayden Gerow, Emersynn Hehrer, Stella Hehrer, Hunter Jones, and Ruth Ann Durrance, along with two more on the way, will also hold dear the memories of their adored great-grandfather.
After completing his education, Jim entered the workforce, where he quickly became known for his reliability and craftsmanship in residential maintenance. His colleagues respected him for his work ethic and his ability to fix just about anything—a true testament to his handy nature. Jim's interests were as varied as they were engaging. He was an avid fisherman, finding solace and joy in the tranquility of the waters. His love for casino games was matched only by his passion for classic cars and Lionel trains, a hobby that showcased his meticulous attention to detail. Jim also had a creative side, enjoying coloring and puzzles, which he often shared with his family. His competitive spirit shone during family game nights, where playing Yahtzee and other board games was a much-anticipated event.
Those who knew Jim will fondly remember his warm smile and the ease with which he made friends. His presence at family gatherings was a source of joy and laughter, and his ability to love unconditionally made him a pillar in the lives of those he touched. In the quiet moments, Jim's family will recall the many life lessons he imparted through his actions—a testament to his character and the indelible mark he has left on their hearts. His passing, though a result of natural causes, does not overshadow the vibrant life he led and the positive impact he had on his community and loved ones.
Jim's departure from this world is not an end but a transition to a place of eternal rest, where he is reunited with his beloved Ruth and his daughter Dawn. His family takes comfort in knowing that his spirit lives on through the stories they will continue to share, the memories they will cherish, and the love that will never fade. As we bid farewell to James "Jim" Durrance, we celebrate a life well-lived—a life filled with love, laughter, and the happiness that comes from a close-knit family.
