Douglas Gerald Thomson, known affectionately as Jerry to his friends and family, passed away peacefully on March 6, 2025, at the age of 77, in Gladwin, Michigan. Born on March 1, 1948, in Detroit, Michigan to Douglas & Ida Thomson. Jerry was 1 of 10 children. Jerry led a life marked by devotion to his loved ones, a passion for his trade, and an unwavering zest for life's many adventures.
Jerry is survived by his beloved wife, Carol Thomson, with whom he shared a beautiful and enduring partnership for 55 years. Their love story was one for the ages, a testament to mutual respect and unwavering support. Together, they raised a family that became Jerry's pride and joy: daughter Shannon and her husband Aaron Hardy, and son Brian and his wife Rachelle Thomson. He was a cherished grandfather to Adam (Renee) Hardy; Rebecca (Brad) Steinmann; and Derek(Chloe), Emma, Paige, Faith and Brock. The joy of his later years was found in his great-grandchildren, Larry Hardy, Aron Hardy, and Dymond Steinmann, who will carry his legacy into the future. Jerry's formative years were spent in Madison Heights, MI, where he completed his high school education before embarking on a career that would define much of his life. He excelled in a Master Plumbing Course, which paved the way for his successful career as a Master Plumber. His expertise and dedication to the craft earned him the respect and admiration of colleagues and clients alike, and his commitment to excellence left an indelible mark on the industry.
Beyond his professional achievements, Jerry was a man of many interests and talents. His love for old cars often saw him tinkering in the garage, restoring classic models to their former glory. The thrill of the ride extended to his enthusiasm for dune buggies and motorcycles, which he enjoyed both as a hobbyist and a mentor to others sharing his passion. The winter months were filled with the roar of snowmobiles as he explored the frosty landscapes with a contagious excitement. He was also a little league football coach.
Summers were spent on the pontoon, where Jerry reveled in the simple pleasures of life on the water. He was also an avid golfer, relishing the camaraderie and challenge of the game. Above all, Jerry was happiest when surrounded by his family. He never missed an opportunity to gather his loved ones, creating memories that would be treasured for generations.
Jerry's life was a reflection of his values: hard work, integrity, and a commitment to the people he loved. His infectious laughter and sage advice will be profoundly missed by all who were fortunate enough to know him.
