James Rapelje

Obituary of James Lawrence Rapelje

James Lawrence Rapelje, age 61, and a lifelong resident of Bay City, passed away peacefully on April 16, 2025, in Auburn, after a courageous battle with cancer. Known affectionately as James by his friends and family, he was a man whose interesting personality, creative spirit, and friendly demeanor left a lasting impression on all who knew him.

He was born on December 27, 1963, to Lloyd Rapelje Sr. and Marlene Rapelje.  James grew up in a household alongside his brothers Lloyd Jr., Benjamin, and Jason. He attended John Glen High School, where he graduated, leaving behind memories of his early artistic talents and a burgeoning love for local sports teams.

James’s professional life was rooted in the Lawn Care industry and Building Maintenance, where he was known for his willingness to lend a hand whenever needed.

A true fan at heart, James's passion for the Detroit Lions and the Red Wings was unwavering. He found great joy in creating artwork that celebrated his favorite teams, often incorporating their themes into his pieces. These works not only showcased his artistic ability but also served as a testament to his loyalty and enthusiasm as a fan.

Those who knew James would describe him as an interesting person to be around—someone who could always be counted on for a friendly conversation. His presence was a comfort, and his creativity, an inspiration.

In the words of Ralph Waldo Emerson, a quote that James was fond of, "To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment." James lived by these words, always true to himself.

James is survived by his brothers, Lloyd and Jason Rapelje; and a community of friends and relatives who will forever cherish his memory.  James was preceded in death by his loving parents, Lloyd and Marlene Rapelje; and his brother, Benjamin.

As we say goodbye to James, we celebrate the life of a man who was as unique and vibrant as the artwork he created. His legacy will live on in the hearts of those he touched and through the beauty he brought into the world with his art and his spirit. James will be deeply missed, but his impact will remain, a reminder of the joy and color he added to the lives of so many.  A private service will be held in the future with family to honor and remember the life of James Lawrence Rapelje. Rest in peace, James.  Your journey here is complete, but your story will continue in the lives you've touched.
