Obituary of John William Steyer
John W. "Jack" Steyer
September 23, 1938 – July 1, 2025
John W. "Jack" Steyer, a devoted Christian, skilled craftsman, and beloved community member, passed away on July 1, 2025, at the age of 86. Born in Bay County, Michigan, Jack’s life was rooted in faith, family, and service.
He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Madalyn A. Steyer; children Liz (Gary) Vogel, John D. Gaber (Rebecca Madden), and Darren A. Gaber; grandchildren Justin Gaber (Mary Kate Abraham), Riley Gaber, Jake Vogel, and Joshua Vogel; and his brother Kenneth L. Steyer (Patricia).
Jack built his life in Beaverton, Michigan, where he restored a 1920s farmhouse and later built his family home on Ross Lake. As a Journeyman sheet metal worker and proud member of Sheet Metal Union Local 7, his skilled craftsmanship was both his livelihood and legacy.
A man of deep faith, Jack was a dedicated member of the Beaverton United Methodist Church, where he remodeled the parsonage and maintained the church. He also served with the Beaverton Lions Club, Gideons International, Habitat for Humanity, and on the Beaverton Planning Commission and City Council.
Jack loved classic cars, especially his 1958 Corvette. He enjoyed puzzles and card games, particularly Euchre, and treasured spending time with his family. His grandchildren were a source of great joy for him. Jack believed in the power of self-reliance and gave his children and grandchildren tools, not just to build and fix things, but to believe in themselves.
Known for his jet-black hair, signature mustache, and bushy eyebrows, Jack was larger than life in both presence and spirit. He led with wisdom, kindness, and conviction, leaving behind a legacy of love, integrity, and craftsmanship.
In lieu of flowers, the family would ask that donations be made to the Beaverton United Methodist Church or the Beaverton Lions Club.
A celebration of his life will take place on Saturday, October 4, 2025, at Beaverton United Methodist Church. Visitation begins at 10 a.m., followed by a service at 11 a.m., with a luncheon immediately afterward.
