Obituary of Matthew James Anderson
Matthew James Anderson, known affectionately as Matt to his friends and family, was called to his eternal home on July 12, 2025, at the age of 80. Born on December 19, 1944, in Lackawanna, New York, Matthew was adopted as an infant by James Joseph and Kathleen Anderson of Pontiac, Michigan. Soon after Matthew’s adoption, the Anderson family grew with the addition of four more biological siblings: a brother, the late Michael (Gloria) Anderson and three sisters, the late Mary (Larry) Plotz, Patricia Shane, and the late Frances Anderson.
Matt's commitment to his faith was evident in the way he conducted himself, always striving to be a role model to his children, nieces, nephews and grandchildren. Matt was a devoted husband to his beloved wife, Billie. As a father to the late Matthew (Margaret McLean) Anderson, Vincent (Kimberly) Anderson, Jamie Vanderver, and Jennifer (Brett) DaSilva, Matt instilled in his children the importance of integrity, hard work, and compassion. His guidance and love shaped them into the remarkable individuals they are today.
Matt's joy was multiplied as he became 'Papa' to his grandchildren, Kate (Ryan) Murphy, Matthew Anderson, Vincent Anderson, and Jack Anderson and great grandpa to Adrian and Regina Murphy. He cherished every moment spent with them, imparting wisdom and creating memories that will be treasured forever.
Matt's education in engineering at Michigan Technological University, where he also played hockey, later laid the foundation for a successful career. Upon graduating from Michigan Tech, Matt served in the United States Army in Germany, a testimony to his love for his country. After he concluded his military service, Matt, Billie and young Matthew returned to Michigan, where Matt began his career in the automotive industry. Matt was also successful in his entrepreneurial ventures: Vee’s Tees, Vince’s Sport Shop at Lakeland Arena and RoxEx Exterminating Company for which he was the proud owner for more than forty years.
Known for his selfless nature, Matt was always ready to lend a helping hand or offer a kind word. He was the epitome of a loving, friendly soul, touching the lives of many with his warmth. An avid hockey player/goalie, coach and fan, Matt played and coached in local leagues well into his later years, and rarely missed watching a game, especially when it involved one of his grandsons. Matt's love for the outdoors was evident in the time he cherished visiting Michigan's upper peninsula with friends and family. It was there at "Gitchigummi", amidst nature's beauty, that he found peace and joy, often accompanied by the laughter of his friends and family.
As we say farewell to Matthew James Anderson, we celebrate a life well-lived — a life filled with purpose, love, and unwavering faith. We are comforted by the assurance that he is now at peace. We take solace in the words of Matthew 25:21, "Well done, good and faithful servant… Enter into the joy of your master”. May his soul be at peace, and may his memory be a blessing to all.
