Walter Parnell Zaleski

February 9, 1945 – August 20, 2025

Walter Parnell Zaleski, age 80, of Kalamazoo, Michigan, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and generosity.

Walter lived a life full of devotion to his family, his work, and his community. He was happiest surrounded by the people he loved, telling stories that ended in his unforgettable laugh, or watching a football game and cheering for his beloved Detroit Lions.

Family was at the very center of his heart. His grandchildren, Gunther, Zophia, Zachary, and Zoe, were his pride and joy, and he never missed an opportunity to cheer them on or share how proud he was of them. Above all, Walter adored his wife, Maureen, with whom he shared adventures traveling the world. Even when faced with illness, his deepest concern was that she would always be cared for.

Walter dedicated his career to building Zaleski Contracting, where his strong work ethic and integrity defined him. He was proud to serve twice as President of the Land Improvement Contractors of America (LICA), where his passion for farm tiling and his willingness to share knowledge earned him respect and lasting friendships. Work was never just a job for Walter, it was a calling he loved to talk about and teach.

What set Walter apart was his generosity. Throughout his life, he opened doors and hearts for others; offering jobs, shelter, or simply a second chance when it was needed most. He lived his faith in action, quietly helping others without expectation.

For more than 50 years, Walter was a devoted member of St. Peter Lutheran Church, where his steady presence and service reflected the deep faith that guided him.

He is survived by his loving wife, Maureen Laurel Zaleski; his children, Walter (Lisa Daubert) Zaleski and Jill (Eric Johnson) Zaleski; his grandchildren; his sons, Jerry (Mary) Gibson and Kenny Gibson; and his brother, Albert Trim. Walter will be deeply missed, but his laughter, wisdom, and generosity of spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.

A service to celebrate Walter’s life will be held at 11 AM, August 26, 2025, at St. Peter Lutheran Church, 2461 N. Raucholz Road, Hemlock, Michigan.  The family will receive friends at church prior to the service from 9-11 AM.
