Leo Thayer

Obituary of Leo Fredric Thayer

Leo Fredrick Thayer, known affectionately to all as Leo, passed away peacefully surrounded by the love of his family on December 14, 2025, at the age of 62. Born on October 25, 1963, in Tawas, Michigan, Leo's life was a testament to the strength and warmth of his spirit. He had the unique ability to light up a room with his loving presence and thoughtful nature, which will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Leo's journey began as the cherished son of Sandra Lee Thayer and Herbert George Thayer, both of whom preceded him in death. His life was a rich tapestry woven with the love of his family, including his two daughters, Ashley Marie Thayer and Heather Livonia Thayer, who sadly left this world before him. He is survived by his beloved wife, Carol, with whom he shared a lifetime of love and joy. Together, they raised a beautiful family including their children Amanda (Jerimy) LaBell, Kristy (Richard) Furman, Robert Thayer, and Samantha (Cliff). Leo's legacy continues through his 15 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and another on the way, each a shining star in the constellation of his life.

Leo's brothers, Larry (Crystal) and Herb (Colleen), and his sisters, Lisa Thompson (Dennis) and Emma Woodruff (Eddie), will remember him as a pillar of strength and guidance. He was a graduate of Ogemaw Heights High School and spent his professional life as the backbone of the sawmill in South Branch, Michigan. Starting as a semi-truck driver, his dedication and leadership qualities saw him rise to the position of plant manager, a role he executed with dedication and pride.

Leo's Christian faith was a cornerstone of his existence, providing him with comfort and purpose. His love for the outdoors was profound, and he was happiest with a fishing rod in hand or while sharing hunting stories with friends and family. Leo's passion for fishing was more than a hobby; it was a way of connecting with nature and those he loved. He took every opportunity to bring his family together, knowing that "The family is one of nature's masterpieces," as famously stated by philosopher George Santayana.

A man of many interests, anything that brought a smile to his face was worth pursuing. Whether it was a family gathering, a quiet afternoon fishing, or simply driving through the scenic routes of northern Michigan, Leo embraced life's simple pleasures. His humor and laughter were infectious, and he was always ready with a joke to lighten the mood or a thoughtful gesture to show he cared.

Leo's memory will be cherished not only for the love he gave but for the wisdom he imparted and the lives he touched. His was a life well-lived, filled with moments that will continue to inspire and comfort his family and all who knew him. Leo Fredrick Thayer's story does not end with his passing; it lives on in the laughter of his grandchildren, the shared tales of his siblings, and the unwavering love of his wife and children.

A celebration of life will be held on January 18, 2026 at noon, at the Hale Senior Center, 310 N. As we bid farewell to this remarkable man, we are reminded that while we mourn his loss, we also celebrate a life that was abundant in love, laughter, and kindness. Leo's journey on earth has concluded, but his spirit remains an indelible part of the lives he touched.
