Obituary of Vicki Susan Gates
Vicki Susan Gates, a cherished daughter, sister, aunt, and friend, was welcomed into the arms of her Lord and Savior on January 2, 2026, after a valiant battle with cancer. Born on October 23, 1962, in Midland, Michigan, Vicki's life was a testament to her loving, kind, and creative spirit. She passed away peacefully in Saginaw, Michigan, surrounded by the love of her family and friends.
Vicki, affectionately known by those close to her as a beacon of light, graduated from Western High School in 1980 and soon embarked on a career that reflected her hardworking and sociable nature. In her early years, she worked at a plastic factory in Coleman, demonstrating a dedication to her craft that was admired by all who worked alongside her. Later, she became a familiar and friendly face as a bartender at the Eagles and the Irish Pub in Bay City, where she poured more than drinks—she poured her heart into every interaction, leaving a lasting impression on her community. A devout Christian, Vicki lived her faith through her actions and words, embodying the virtues of love and kindness in every facet of her life. Her belief in the goodness of others and the grace of God was unshakable, and she served as an inspiration to all who knew her.
Vicki's interests were as unique and vibrant as her personality. With a passion for automobiles, she found joy in working on cars, especially older models, a hobby that showcased her exceptional talent and patience. Her technological prowess was equally impressive, as she built her own computer and created numerous discs, a testament to her ingenuity and skill. Vicki's family was the cornerstone of her life. She is survived by her father, Robert (Judy) Gates; her brothers, Jim Gates and Kevin Gates; her step-siblings, Jenny and Ryan; her beloved Aunt Mary Steger; her special cousin Michelle Steger Mikey, forever friend and caregiver, Diane Mohr; and her special friend, Alice Meyer. Her spirit will continue to live on through the many nieces, nephews, and cousins whose lives she touched. Vicki was preceded in death by her mother, Alice Schymanski Jankowski, and her sister, RaeAnn Callahan.
As we bid farewell to Vicki, we are reminded of the words of the apostle Paul: "For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain" (Philippians 1:21). Vicki's life was indeed for Christ, and we take comfort in knowing that she has gained the eternal peace promised to all of God's children. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the staff and nurses at Covenant Harrison 2nd floor for their unwavering support and loving care during Vicki's final days. Their compassion and dedication were a source of solace and strength for Vicki and her family. Vicki Susan Gates will be profoundly missed, but the love and light she shared will continue to shine brightly in the hearts of those she leaves behind. Her legacy of kindness, creativity, and unwavering faith will be cherished forever. As we celebrate her life, we are comforted by the belief that she is now at peace in the glorious presence of her Creator.
