Obituary of Elvira York
Elvira York, our beloved daughter, sister, mother, and grandmother passed away from chronic illness on January 10, 2026 at Covenant Healthcare in Saginaw, Michigan. She was born March 15, 1937 to Fred Gilliam and Nellie Carter in Shreveport, Louisiana.
Since Elvira enjoyed helping people, she decided on a career as a nursing assistant. She worked as a nursing assistant until she retired nearly 20 years ago. She was a natural born caregiver. Elvira was a God fearing woman who loved going to church to worship the Lord and spend time with her family going to the casino.
She leaves to cherish her memory one daughter Bernice York; grandchildren Terry Parker, Saejar Parker, Robert Weems, Jack Tillman, Elvira Parker, Jamarr York, Nathan Thomas, and Jessica Menzies; siblings Fred Gilliam Jr., Mary Gilliam Furgerson, Alma Gilliam, Brady Gilliam, Leslie Gilliam, Beulah Gilliam, Hattie Gilliam Wilson, and Johnny Gilliam; and a host of great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, family and a special friend Robert Clarke.
Elvira was preceded in death by her husband Clarence York Sr.; one son Clarence York Jr.; two daughters Verna Irvin and Erma York; her parents Fred Gilliam and Nellie Carter; one grandson Jermaine York; siblings Henry Samuel, Carl Taylor, Gloria Scott, and Aubrey Taylor; sisters-in-law Iola Butler and Lucille York; brothers-in-law Robert York, Jesse York, LC Brown, and Samuel York; one niece Odessa Barnes; one nephew Robert York.
