Obituary of Gary Wayne Martenis

Gary Wayne Martenis of Owosso Michigan was born in Owosso, May 20, 1943 to Everett and Cecilia (Lyon) Martenis.  He graduated from Owosso High School in June, 1961 and then attained all of his educational degrees from Michigan State University.  He first taught in Flint Michigan and then returned to his home town of Owosso for thirty years at the Owosso Middle School. He also taught Driver Education and Adult Education at Owosso High School.  Gary coached for many years and he was also an MHSSA official.

Gary was very active in his community over many years.  He volunteered for the Lions Club, American Legion, Moose, Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and various school functions.  He has assisted the Cub Scouts, was on the Owosso Historical Commission, and on the Shiawassee Area Transportation Agency (SATA) Board.  His passion for wanting to help others was instrumental in him being elected and serving on the Owosso City Council from 2007 to 2011.  He also attained 4th degree in the Knights of Columbus.  Gary was an avid and accomplished golfer, he had shot his age many times.  He was a lifelong MSU fan and enjoyed officiating marriages, including his daughter Mysti.

He is survived by his daughter Mysti (John) Popplewell of Gaylord MI, step-son Eric (Debbie) Vincent of Owosso MI, step-son Chad Vincent of Florida, step-daughter Amber Vincent of Owosso MI. Grandchildren Julieanne, Brittney, Khayly, Dehrian, Luke, Khi-Ree, Dawsuhn and four great-grandchildren, sister Penny (Chris) Wheeler/McNinch of Owosso, niece Michelle (Wheeler) DeLisle, lifelong best friend Lee Howell and long lost love Marianne Owen.  He was preceded in death by his parents, his favorite wife Linda in 2012, his beloved daughters Diane Linay in 1986 and Lene' Diann in 2023.  To sign online guestbook, visit www.cremationsocietymidmi.com  Arrangements made with the Cremation Society of Mid Michigan.
