Margaret Houghteling

Obituary of Margaret Lorraine Houghteling

Margaret “Peg” Lorraine (Gawne) Houghteling, age 90, passed away on January 21, 2026, at Timberline Lodge in Caro, Michigan, a place she lovingly called home, surrounded by a staff whose kindness, love, and support meant so much to her. Peg was born November 12, 1935, on her parents Grafton and Gladys Gawne’s farm in Midland, Michigan, where she learned the value of hard work, family, and simple joys. She spent most of her life in Vassar, Michigan, and made her home in Caro during her later years.

Peg was preceded in death by her son Jeff Colosky; her husband Jack Houghteling; stepchildren Gary and Gordon Houghteling; granddaughter Olivia Colosky; her sisters Betty (Stoley) and Bernice (Raymond); and her brothers George, Cy, Bill, and Jerry Gawne.

She retired from Means Industries after 22 years of dedicated work. Peg was known for her fun‑loving, easygoing nature and her love of adventure. She enjoyed traveling, fishing on the Saginaw Bay, reading, and playing cards with family and friends. Some of her favorite memories were made on casino trips with her sister‑in‑law Pat Gawne where laughter was guaranteed. She belonged to the Fraternal Order of Eagles of Vassar as a golden eagle where she and family members would spend time laughing and seeing what kind of “trouble” they could get into.

Peg was her grandchildren and great‑grandchildren’s biggest cheerleader. No matter the sport or the weather, she arrived with her little cooler and Coca-Cola folding chair, ready to cheer them on with pride. She was also a devoted Detroit Tigers fan, faithfully keeping track of their wins, losses, and stats each season.

Left to cherish moments and memories are her 4 children: son Ted Colosky, daughter in law Deb; daughter Lisa LeFevre son in law Tommy; son Mike Colosky, daughter in law Melissa; daughter Michelle Matthews, daughter in law Nadine Davis. She is also survived by her stepdaughter Deb Bergman, son-in-law Ed, seven grandchildren, fourteen great‑grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Peg loved her family deeply and cherished every moment spent together.

Her warmth, humor, and unwavering love — along with the resilience and determination that carried her through life — will be missed by all who knew her.

To honor Peg’s wishes there will not be a funeral or memorial service held.  To sign online guestbook, visit www.cremationsocietymidmi.com  Arrangements made with the Cremation Society of Mid Michigan.
