Obituary of Derek John Stratelak

With heavy hearts, we share the passing of Derek “Rick” John Stratelak of Grosse Pointe, MI, who died on February 8, 2026, after a courageous 21-month battle with glioblastoma.

Born on December 15, 1960, to Ernest and Nadia Stratelak, Rick was raised in Grosse Pointe Woods alongside his older twin brothers. He graduated from Grosse Pointe North High School in 1979 and later earned his degree from Michigan State University. Rick went on to marry Eileen (Fleming), and together built a beautiful life in Grosse Pointe, welcoming three daughters, and two grandchildren.

Rick spent his professional career as an environmental scientist and landscape architect, guided by his deep respect for the land and his love for the outdoors. That love shaped not only his work but his entire life, where nearly all his hobbies were rooted outdoors—golf, hunting and sport shooting, spending quiet hours by the water fishing, cycling and skiing long runs, camping and traveling, and playing fetch with is cherished yellow labs.

Rick will be remembered for his love of the outdoors and exploring new places, his skills with tools and fire, his unwavering love for good food, scotch, and wine, and his excellent teaching skills, both on the range and off. He leaves behind a legacy of wisdom, integrity, and a life lived fully and authentically.

Rick is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Eileen Stratelak; his three daughters, Jaclyn Birkholz (Brad), Nicole Stratelak, Jennifer Stratelak; and his grandchildren, Hudson and Ava Birkholz. He is also survived by his older brothers: Gerard Stratelak (Patricia) and Taras Stratelak, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, godchildren, and extended family members.

Service will be held on Saturday, March 7, 2026, at Saint Clare of Montefalco, with visitation at 10:00 a.m., the funeral Mass at 10:30 a.m., and a Celebration of Life immediately following.
