Obituary of James Gerald Richard Smith
James “Jimbo” Gerald Richard Smith, age 63, of Owosso, passed away Thursday, May 7, 2026, at Haven of Rest surrounded by family.
James was born on April 7, 1963 in Owosso to Glora Ann Rodgers and Eugene Smith. James attended Owosso High School until he departed early to join the United States Army, an accomplishment that he was very proud of. He later earned his GED while serving in the Army. James climbed the ranks to become a Senior Drill Sergeant before finishing his career in the service.
James loved the outdoors, a trait that he passed down to his children. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. Stories of the one that got away will be shared for years to come. Carrying on with his love for the outdoors, James enjoyed the freedom of riding the open road with friends and family. He had a love for playing cards and most weeks you could find him out at his brother-in-law’s as “reigning champion” of the Euchre tournament.
James was the type of person who worked hard and always lent a helping hand whenever he could. There wasn’t anything that he wouldn’t do to protect his family.
Left to carry on his stories and legacy James leaves behind his wife Cassandra; children; James (Sarah) Smith, Nina (Cassie) Hoppes, Colby (Landon) Ritchie, Nevada (Carly) Smith, Montana Smith, Ryan Dennis and Emalie (Aaron) Green; parents Terry and Ann Brown; sister TeAnna (Jimmy) Taphouse and many nieces, nephews and grandchildren.
James was preceded in death by his biological father Eugene; brother Norm; grandparents and many other relatives.
James was cremated per his wishes. Funeral services will take place at 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 6, 2026 at Owosso Church of Christ, 2005 M-52 Owosso, MI 48867. Pastor Jeremy Wittwer will be officiating. Following the services, a luncheon will be held for family and friends.
