Obituary of Joe Nathan Calhoun

Mr. Joe Nathan Calhoun of Saginaw, Michigan passed away on Friday, July 2, 2021, at the age of 70. Joe died peacefully in his home with his beloved wife of almost 33 years, and their children by his side. He was predeceased by his parents, Joe and Mattie Calhoun; his brother, Nelson Calhoun; his sister, Josephine Calhoun of Arcadia, FL; a special uncle, Lank Mims Sr.; a friend, Dwints Bowman; and his parents-in-law. Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Kelly Calhoun; their children, Jasmine Calhoun, Kenyon Calhoun, Kiara & L. Alexander Ford, and Tori & Lloyd Bodiford. Also, is his sister, Dorothy Wicker of San Diego, CA; a sister and brother-in-law, Kimberley & Oscar Williams; brother-in-law, Jason Hood; special aunt, Claudia Mims; lifelong friends, Herbert Williams, Elmer “Monk” Swilley, Malik Shabazz, Vernon Bowman of Las Vegas, NV; special cousins, Antwan and Lank Mims Jr.; and a host of nieces and nephews. Joe was born in Union Springs, Alabama on September 29, 1950, to Joe Franklin and Mattie Pearl Calhoun. They relocated to Saginaw, Michigan where he graduated from Saginaw High School and later attended Western Michigan University. On November 26, 1988, he married the love of his life, Kelly Hood and together they had 3 children. Each child then contributed to his title of “Grandah” and he was blessed with his 3 beautiful granddaughters, Ava Kai, Kensli, and Tru Rose. Joe was a devoted husband, father, grandfather; a United States Air Force Veteran; and avid griller. It did not matter if it was 32 degrees or 80 degrees, he would be on the grill. He enjoyed being around his family and friends, laughing and cracking jokes. Joe was knowledgeable and enjoyed reading, watching the history channel, was a sports fan of all Michigan teams, and car shows. He was a devoted Christian and served at Holy Mission Ministries for over 30 years. He will deeply be missed by his family, friends, and all who knew him. The Calhoun family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Holy Mission Ministries, Jacob’s Ladder Ministries, Nurse Neema, The University of Michigan Hospital Oncology staff, and countless extended family and friends. A Memorial Service will be held at 1 P.M., Saturday July 10, 2021, at Jacob’s Ladder Ministries, 1926 Fairfield St., Saginaw, MI 48602. Pastor David A. Howard will officiate.
