Dear Mary Jo and family,
Please accept my condolences in the passing of your beloved husband and father. There are some images that stay with us forever, one such image is Bill in his perfectly manicured yard. In his absence, I will continue to see him at the squirrel feeder, his hat, his watchful eye as curator of your corner home.
He was a respected neighbor, may he rest in peace.
With fond memories,
Kimberly L. Zajac
(Bill always called me "Kimmie")

Dear Mary Jo and family,
Please accept my condolences in this time of grief. Bill was a good mentor to me when I joined the Board of the Castle Museum; he always supported me and had faith in me. I appreciated that he encouraged those with doctoral degrees to be acknowledged. I learned a lot from him and will miss his insight, energy, and enthusiasm. I know my words are inadequate in the face of the pain you are feeling, but I hope they bring some small measure of comfort. Please know that I am keeping you all in my thoughts. Sincerely, Amy French

So sorry to hear about your loss. Dr. Scharffe was a great colleague, who was a team player that was a major contributor to the operations of Saginaw Public Schools. It was good to have the opportunity to work with him.

MaryJo, I was so shocked & saddened to hear of Bill’s passing! You know how much Bill & I thought of each other. He was my favorite teacher, public speaking at AHHS in 1968! He kept in touch with me over the years, and I so enjoyed visiting your beautiful home and helping you with new flooring over the last few years. Bill gave so much to his students and the people of Saginaw. He will be so missed! Always loved our Michigan State talks!! He was the best fan ever! Please know I will be praying for peace & strength for you during this difficult time! With love & sympathy. Linda Tomandl

Mary Jo, Sue and Bill ~ We are all so sorry for your loss. He was such a wonderful man, the world won’t be the same without him in it. I was blessed to meet this loveable, kind and caring man when I was 14 years old working in the office at North Junior High School. He thought enough of me to entrust me to babysit for his two precious children, Susie and Billy - I know you are Sue and Bill now but to me you will forever be Susie and Billy, my flower girl and ring bearer. I always felt like part of your family, he was like a second father to me, always looking out for my best interest, always there with education and career advice and the best letters of recommendation ever written! Our plan was for me to study engineering at MSU but that plan changed when I met (and married) a Michigan Wolverine ... he still loved me anyway and welcomed the Wolverine into the family with never-ending college rivalry banter. A few years later Dr. Bill began making annual visits to our home as Santa ~ Kristi and Ryan still have such great memories of Santa’s visits, they especially loved the limo ride to go see all the Christmas lights. His educational and career accomplishments were many but his biggest accomplishment and priority was his family. The love and pride he felt for all of you was obvious, Mary Jo he adored you! Hold all the memories close, he will be missed but never forgotten <3
With much love,
Mike, Shelly, Kristi and Ryan Masica

I once golfed in an outing with Bill… him and I discovered we lived down the street from each other. He told me that I could stop by his house and out back he had a fridge where I could just grab a beer if I wanted, if I was walking by. That will always stick with me.
