Obituary of Julia Marie Schmidt

Julia M. (Garnica) Schmidt October 28, 1940 - February 25, 2022 Julia Schmidt, age 81, of Saginaw, Michigan, passed away February 25, 2022 at Covenant Hospital. She was the daughter of the late Francisco, and Zeferina (Arvizu) Garnica and was born in Albee Township in 1940. Julia graduated from St. Joseph High School in 1958. She had a strong faith and was a member of St. Mary’s Cathedral in Saginaw. She worked for many years at Henry Feige’s and Son Furniture Store. She also worked for Morley’s and Citizens Bank. She furthered her education at Saginaw Valley State University (making the Dean’s list) with a Bachelor Degree of Social Work, graduating in 1990. Following that, she pursued her dream of being a Social Worker for the State of Michigan. After retiring she continued to help families by being a supervisor at Child Haven, a receiving and foster care. She was later employed by the Saginaw County Health Department, working with pregnant teenagers and teenage mother’s nutrition. She wasn’t ready to settle down yet, and took a position with Saginaw County Commission On Aging. She did lots of volunteering and community involvement over the years. Julia had a huge heart and was thoughtful of others, and would help anyone if it was possible for her to do so. She touched and had an impact on many lives of all ages. In Julia’s downtime you could find her in her yard tending to her plants and flowers, daisies being her favorite. Julia collected Angels, and to her, you could never have too many. She really enjoyed going for walks (even in the rain); her favorite singer was Neil Diamond and she attended many of his concerts. For the fun of it she played the lottery and scratched off lottery tickets. She also loved planning getting togethers and cooking meals, whether it was for family, friends, or funerals. She liked reading and had a large collection of books. In addition, she was a huge MSU fan, and watched their games no matter what the sport. She relaxed watching Lifetime and Hallmark movies. She was thoughtful and sent cards out for all occasions to those that she thought of. She loved to celebrate and decorate for all the holidays. Julia was very out- spoken and would let you know what she felt you needed to hear. Many felt welcomed, safe, and loved at grandma Julia’s house. She was a giver and will forever be remembered for her love and generosity. Julia is survived by her family of 5 children, Lisa Young, Francis “Vince” Schmidt (Christine Price), Thomas (Holly) Schmidt, Roberta “Birdie” Schmidt (Tom Grunwell), Alessandra Schmidt-Cooper; 19 grandchildren, Melissa Mitchell, Angelina Young, Sara Jordan, Marissa Price, Vinny Schmidt, Quinn Schmidt, Simon Peter Romanchik, Johnathon Schmidt, Miriam Schmidt, Andrew Schmidt, Esther Schmidt, Joshua Schmidt, Rebekkah Schmidt, Joseph Schmidt, Timothy Lozano, Jose Lozano, Valerie Lozano, Tanner Cooper, and Payton Cooper; 13 great- grandchildren; 3 sisters, Maria Flory, Ana Rosa McCollum, and Helen Czeizperger; as well as several special aunts, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
