A favorite moment with Gene was this: In one of the many lengthy phone calls Gloria and I shared, I mentioned that I missed the beautiful fall leaves of my native Michigan since moving to California. The next Spring we visited Gloria and Gene at their home. Gene handed me a large manilla envelope and said, "You might want to keep that flat." I couldn't imagine what was inside. On opening it, I found a lovely collection of pressed autumn leaves, picked up by Gene himself and kept in beautiful condition until he could give them to me. I felt like I'd just received the most beautiful bouquet of flowers! Thank you, Gene, for your thoughtfulness. I will miss those visits and, most of all, your great sense of humor.
