Margaret Metcalf

Obituary of Margaret Josephine Metcalf

Margaret Josephine Metcalf died peacefully at her residence with family by her side on Saturday April 9, 2022 at the age of 88. Born on March 23, 1934 to Pasquale and Eileen Porrazzo in Providence, Rhode Island, she moved to Midland, Michigan after marrying Tom L. Metcalf who preceded her in death. Our mom was small in stature but lived life large; with passion and laughter and never backing away from a challenge. She taught us lessons in patience, forgiveness, humility, the importance of family and perseverance in the face of adversity. She had a childlike approach to life, more often she would be found wherever the little children were. She loved their innocence and their imagination. Humor and the ability to never take herself too seriously was at the core of her personality, fully embracing and encouraging anything silly. She was the ‘silly grandma’ stopping at nothing to bring smiles to the faces of our children and the children she cared for over the years. Many families around Midland are grateful for the excellent care she gave to their children, She had the gift of hospitality, loved to be in her kitchen serving up equal doses of good food and good humor to all who gathered around her table. She also shared this gift in support of various church ministries. a wonderful release for her cooking creativity and so appreciated by all. Margaret is survived by her children, Linda (Harry) Guenther, residents of Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, Laura (Joe) Yatch, and Loren Metcalf residents of Midland; and a sister, Veronica Manzo. She also leaves four grandchildren, Stephanie (Bill) Nietzke, Marissa Scherf, Joshua (Carrie) Yatch and Rachelle (Mazin) Adam. Margaret was preceded in death by grandson, Derek Guenther; brothers, Frank, Albert, and Junior; and sisters Virginia and Patsy. Margaret has nine great-grandchildren, Malachi Lyon, Nevaeh and Elisha Scherf, Mia Nietzke, Zayne and Zoya Adam, Cole, Shelby and Owen Yatch. We wish to express our gratitude to the staff of MyMichigan Home Care-Woodland Hospice for their excellent support and care for Margaret and our family these last few months.
