James Thomas, age 87, passed away peacefully at Brian's House in Essexville on Wednesday, January 17, 2024 with his family by his side. He was born in Saginaw to proud parents Preston and Margaret on May 3, 1936. A proud veteran, James served in the United States Army from 1956 to 1959 and was honorably discharged. His dedication and sacrifice for his country will be remembered and appreciated. James worked at GM Steering Gear, retiring after 30 years of service.
Since James returned to Michigan in 2013 he found great joy in spending time with his family. Until he became ill, he would be found spending time with his great-grandchildren and attending numerous sporting events cheering them on. He frequently showed his appreciation to his close family for the love, care, and endless support ensuring his needs were met. The family memories will last forever, and he will be greatly missed but never forgotten.
James leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories. He is survived by children, Bonnie (Paul Austin) Thomas, Bridget Thomas, Connie (James Niedzwiecki) Gauthier, Vern Gauthier, and Randy (Lynn) Gauthier. He was a devoted grandfather to Kurtis Pake, Kimberly (Bryan) Valencia, Matt (Kendra) Gauthier, Nick (Alyssa) Gauthier, and Christopher (Emily) Randall; great-grandchildren, Blake Valencia, Brett Valencia, Ean Gauthier, Ellie Gauthier, Matalyn Gauthier, Kendyl Gauthier, and Harrison Randall. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Viola; his son, Christopher; and great-grandson, Parker.
A Memorial Mass will be held at 11:00 A.M., Friday, January 26, 2024, at Our Lady of Peace Parish. 607 E. South Union Street, Bay City MI. The family will receive friends at church from 10 A.M. until the time of service. Fr. Patrick O’Connor will officiate with entombment taking place at St. Patrick’s Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests those planning an expression of sympathy consider memorial contributions to Brian's House in Essexville. The family would like to extend their sincerest appreciation to John (McLaren Hospice), Barb, and the entire Brian's House team for their exceptional care during James' final days.
