Obituary of John Anthony Horny

John “Sonny” Horny, age 89, of Sebewaing, Michigan, passed away peacefully at home on February 12, 2024. He was born on May 31, 1934, in Hemlock, Michigan to the late Augusta (Gregus) and John Horny Jr. John was known for his heartfelt blessings that always brought tears to everyone's eyes. He had a constant smile on his face and would wave to everyone he passed.
John is survived by his loving wife, Sharon; his children, John (Shelly) Horning, Steve Horny, Mark (Kathy) Horn, Paul (Anita) Horny, Mary Bai, Tom (Norma) Horny, Judy (Roger) Thompson, RJ (Andra) Shier, Julie (Chris) Mielke, and Amy Kain (Gary Morris). He was also a loving grandfather to Matthew (Jane) Horny, Jeremy (Elizabeth) Jones, Bethany Horning, Josh (Nadija) Horning, Gwendolyn Horning, Ian Horning, Ashley Rombs, Anna (Jason) McMall, Phillip (Ashley) Horny, Jared (Eddie Jo) Horny, Allison (Tim) Jones, Alexander Horn, Natalie Horny, Justin Bai, Ryan Kain, Lila Kain, Sophia Morris, Nolan Morris, Brooke Thompson, Matthew Thompson, Alan Shier, Alex (Chris) Folger, Ashley (Rod) Tietz, Christopher Mielke Jr, and Nathan (Kaitlyn) Mielke; and 25 great-grandchildren. Additionally, Sonny leaves behind four sisters, three brothers and their spouses, Rose Ann Delemeester, Jim Horny (Carol Girard), Patricia and Fred Howe, Betty and Mike McGee, Joan Duran, Robert Horny, Donald Horny, a brother-in-law Dave (Nancy) Gleason, and two sisters-in-law, Janet Ligget, Marlene Gleason, and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
John was preceded in death by his son, Dave Horny; daughter, Janet Horny; step-son, Jeff Shier; and grandson, Paul Horny Jr. He was also preceded in death by five sisters and a brother, Helen (Tobi) Breternitz, Barbara Ann Lewandowski, Mary Ann Fordos, Virginia Siler, Agnes Horny, and Jimmy Horny; and brothers-in-law, Terry Gleason, Louis Fordos, Ray Siler, and Larry Deelmeester.
John attended Hemlock High School and later went on to have a successful career as an Agriculture Sales professional. He also served as Huron County Commissioner from 2009 to 2012. John was a faithful member of Holy Family Catholic Church of Sebewaing. He found solace and strength in his religious beliefs. In his free time, John enjoyed fishing, watching baseball, tinkering in his garage, listening to Polka music, and traveling the country roads to visit farmers and check the crops in the fields, which brought him much joy.
A Memorial Service to celebrate John's life will take place at Holy Family Catholic Church, 8370 Unionville Road, Sebewaing, Michigan, on Saturday, May 4, 2024 at 10 AM. John Horny will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all those whose lives he touched. May his soul rest in peace.
