Obituary of George Thomas Wells
Please share a memory of George to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
On Thursday April 18, 2024, G. Thomas Wells “Tom” passed away at the age of 74, with his wife of 54 years at his side.
Tom was born to Jerry and Barbara Wells in 1950 in Evansville, Indiana and was the oldest of four siblings: Dan, Jan, and Susan.
After the Wells family moved to Rockledge, Florida, Tom met his future wife Nancy Scheerhorn in middle school. Tom played saxophone in the school band, was on the wrestling team, and was active with the Boy Scouts.
Both Tom and Nancy attended the University of Florida, marrying in their junior year before Tom graduated with a BS in chemistry and accepted a position at Dow Chemical in Midland, Michigan in 1972.
They established roots in Midland with the birth of their two sons, Jerrett and Andrew.
After 32 years at Dow, Tom retired to start another career at the Midland Academy of Advanced Studies where he taught chemistry for eight years. He created a food science course with Nancy’s help, illustrating the practical chemical reactions in our daily lives.
Tom was very active within the United Church of Christ of Midland. He held leadership and membership positions in administrative committees and helped shape the church into an open and affirming congregation.
Tom was a man of science, faith, service, and art that supported and loved those around him to the best of his ability for his entire life. He will be greatly missed.
Tom was preceded in death by his father Jerry, mother Barbara, and sister Susan, and survived by his brother Dan, sister Jan, wife Nancy, sons Jerrett and Andrew, and granddaughter Eliza.
