I always felt comfortable enough around your parents to call them Mom and Dad. Mike always made me waffles when I spent the night, and a little too happy to put a rifle in my hand for a photo and a shooting session. He was always very kind and I remember him at every basketball or softball game of Devan’s. My strongest memory is when he sat me Theresa and Devan down, shared some very sad stories of Vietnam of how he couldn’t grab drinks with his friends… he slid us a 20$ and made us rip it in to three pieces for one day to us get drinks together in honor of the opportunity he never got. He was and is a great a hero.

Although Mike retired from LFD several years before I did, we worked together on the same shift for many years. I recall a year when our crew at the old Station 4 on S. Penn. adopted a needy family in the community for Christmas. Mike was the station captain, and we took the rig to Sam's Club to buy items for our adopted family. We spent close to $300 on food, clothes, and gifts, most of it Mike's personal money at his insistence. On the way back to the station, the cabinets on the rig were crammed full with all that we had bought. Those of us who were stationed with Mike and worked with him closely saw first-hand his generous spirit toward those in need, not just on that occasion but others as well. Kathy, my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

I had Mike in scouts at St. Casimir, troop 17. I don't remember where we were camping but he ate 17 pancakes for breakfast. Troop record for sure. When he returned from the service, he contacted me regarding his Order of the Arrow Vigil Honor certificate. He had been in basic tng and came home on leave before going to Vietnan. He came to camp and completed the requirements but because he had not registered, they had no certificate. I had to find a way to prove he was there that weekend. I had a friend who always had a camera at scouting events. He had a photo of the 5 individuals after they completed the day. Mike had on a vigil triangle sash. That was proof enough along with his friend Larry Boyce being there and giving varication. Larry Boyce remembered as they were on staff together at camp and talked about both going to Vietnam. Larry had just completed Army basic tng also that weekend. Blessing to Mikes family. RIP Mike. Dan Purtill, Lupton MI

Growing up on Moores River Drive,we didn’t have a lot, but we didn’t seem to know it. Sure there were kids at Saint Casimir that had the latest fashions but we pretty much ignored them. Pop was the scout master and that seemed to occupy a lot of our lives. Mom and Dad had bought a WW11 surplus’s small mobil home that they kept at Holland Lake. Our summers there were magic ,, anyway. Mike and my bedrooms faced the back yard , and in those days everyone had a burning barrel out back for trash. So anyway Mike and I got in trouble for something or another and Pop said … He was gonna burn our Toys. So I am in my room crying, staring at the fire in the burning barrel. Mike comes in and asks why I am crying. I said because dad was burning our toys, to which came a calm immediate response “ That’s the trash, we don’t have enough to make that big a fire”

So many memories of Mike but one stands out. There were many times we worked together on the LFD ambulance. Not unusual but we would talk for hours, sometimes never get out of the rig before the next call. One thing I knew for sure, what I told Mike in confidence would never be repeated. Thank you
