Obituary of James Melvin Schumacher

Please share a memory of James to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

James “Spud” Melvin Schumacher, age 71, of Port Austin, passed away peacefully Tuesday, October 15, 2024 with his family by his side, after a short but courageous battle with cancer.

Jim was born in Sandusky, MI on July 23, 1953 to MaryAnn and the late Melvin Schumacher. He attended North Huron Schools before graduating and going on to trade school. He married his high school sweetheart, Debra Gordon, on November 3rd, 1973. He worked in machine repair at Tower Automotive for 46 years. He was a long-time volunteer of the Kinde Area Fire Department, and after retirement was honored to serve as President of the fire board.

Jim was known for his love of Ford trucks and Mustangs. He drove a Mustang throughout his entire adult life. He could tinker for hours in his shed or garage and always stayed busy. He could fix anything and everything. He loved his wife and family immensely and enjoyed spending time with them. Jim really loved a good joke and made everyone laugh with his own. He will be truly missed by all who loved him and who were a part of his life.

Jim is survived by his wife of 50 and 1/2 years, Debbie; children, Kelly Champagne, Amber (Jason) Schreur, and Brian (Sherry) Schumacher; grandchildren, MacKensie Champagne (Nick), Isabella Herford (Caden), Braden Schumacher (Brooke), Connor Schumacher (Santanna), and Preston and Lucas Schreur; great-grandson, Greyson Schumacher; mother, MaryAnn Schumacher; brother, Bob (Jean) Schumacher; sisters, Nancy (Arnie) Andreski and Peggy (Jim) Wisneski; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Melvin Schumacher.

Per Jim's wishes cremation has taken place and a celebration of life will take place at a later date. In remembrance of Jim's life, the family asks that any memorial donations be made to Kinde Area Fire Department Toys for Tots or Compassus Hospice Care Cass City. To sign online guestbook, visit www.cremationsocietymidmi.com  Arrangements made with Cremation Society of Mid Michigan.
