Obituary of John Paul West
Please share a memory of John to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of John Paul West on November 1, 2024, at the age of 60. After a strong fight with ALS, John met every stage of this disease with an unwaveringly positive outlook. Even as he fought through the most difficult symptoms, his spirit remained unbroken.
Born on November 25, 1963, John was a man of remarkable talent and character. As a gifted artist and passionate musician, his creativity brought beauty and joy to those around him. John loved fiercely and made others feel uniquely special. He found immense joy in doing many things, though mostly in spending time with his family and friends. He was happiest when surrounded by music, especially during family jam sessions, watching his brother's band, 'J. West Special', and listening to his favorite artists and bands like Pink Floyd and Stevie Ray Vaughn.
His personality was as warm as it was captivating; his charm, kindness, and humor could light up any room. His relaxed approach to life and steadfast strength of mind inspired all who knew him. Whether with family, friends, or new acquaintances, John was quick to share a smile and an encouraging word. Known for his ability to make anyone feel at ease, he had a way of connecting with people, especially with his humor that endured through the very end.
He is survived and deeply missed by his two children, Matthew (Hope) Madigan and Julia (Dakota) Tipmore, and his cherished grandchildren, Emberlee Madigan and Elijah Madigan, who will carry forward his spirit and creativity. John is also survived by his six beloved siblings—James West (Sally Hair), Mary West, who stayed by his side until the very end, Robert (Michele) West, Richard (Julie) West, Patrick (Jamie) West, and Michael (Laura) West; along with multiple nieces and nephews, his longtime friend John "Ole' Blue" (Jodi) Sheneman, treasured cousin Jean (Jerry) Pelletier and a large circle of friends who considered him a brother in heart and soul. John was preceded in death by his loving parents, Florence and James West and nephews Joshua Paul West, Blake James Culler, Justin Lee Hair and niece Shannon Marie Hair.
John leaves behind a legacy of kindness, strength, and artistry that will continue to inspire all who knew him. His memory will be cherished, and his laughter deeply missed. In honoring John’s wishes, no formal memorial service will be held. Instead, a celebration of life—a “big party”—will take place at Scotty's Sandbar, 1201 Evergreen Dr., Bay City, Michigan 48706, December 1, 2024 from 4PM - 8PM to remember and celebrate the joy he brought to so many.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the staff at the Bay County Medical Care Facility for their compassionate care and support during John's final months. In lieu of flowers, those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider Memorial Contributions to The ALS Association (https://www.als.org).
