Thomas “Tim” Owen Harmon
Midland, MI
Tom passed away December 5, 2024 at age 74. Tom was known as Tim to his family and through school. He was born in Buffalo, NY on May 26, 1950, the first child of Thomas Otto Harmon and his wife, the former Mary Lou Keeler. The family moved back to the Midland area after his father graduated from college in Buffalo. Tom completed his primary and secondary education at Bullock Creek Schools where he played on the high school football, wrestling, and golf teams. He was also a drummer in the band which he always said was “the best band in the land”. He graduated in 1968 and in November he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He served four years achieving the rank of yeoman third class. Most of his service was in Hawaii where he was the driver for Admiral Roy Isaman until his honorable discharge in 1972. After his Navy service, Tom earned his Associates degree in Business Administration from Delta College. He worked in outside sales for home improvement for Sears and Wolohan Lumber. He retired from Lowe’s in 2013 where he worked as an installed sales manager.
In December of 1969, Tom married his high school sweetheart, the former Fyllis Baker. She predeceased him in 2011. He and Fyllis raised three children, of whom he was very proud. Tom found love again and married the former Elaine Baird on September 15, 2013. She survives him. Tom’s favorite memories were of coaching both of his daughters on their high school softball and volleyball teams and watching his son play high school baseball and football. Tom continued his coaching career after his children were grown by coaching the Midland Lady Explorers softball team and the Delta College women’s softball team. He loved traveling and particularly enjoyed the last road trip he had with Fyllis to South Dakota where he watched her excitement at seeing all the covered bridges in Iowa while she reveled in his awe at seeing the Field of Dreams. Tom was a life-long sports fan and a diehard follower of the Detroit Lions and the University of Michigan football teams. He was so happy with the Lions’ performance these last two seasons! After marrying Elaine, he found he loved cruising. His favorite cruise was to the Panama Canal.
Tom was predeceased by his parents; his baby sister, Patty Harmon; and his uncle, Carl Harmon. Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Elaine; son, Robert (Jannah) Harmon; daughters, Beth (Brian) Bredt and Erin (Jason) Pung. He also leaves behind his beloved grandchildren, Avery and Penelope Harmon, Sara, Bella and Briana Bredt and Grace and Samuel Pung; along with his brother, Steve Harmon; his best friend, Tim Davidson; and his kitties, Samantha, Max and Finnegan. Tom had a great love of animals. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider memorial contributions to the Humane Society of Midland County. As Tom requested, he has been cremated, and a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date when the weather is warmer.
