John passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 16, 2015 at the age of 75. He was born in Scoggins in Grubbs, Arkansas on January 15, 1940 to the late John and Frances (Moskus) Bates. John proudly served in the U. S. Army and was a veteran of the Vietnam War. John was also a member of the V.F.W. and Eagles clubs. John was a retired long haul trucker and enjoyed his time travelling around the nation. Prior to being a trucker, he worked many years at Bay City Foundry, which is now called Bay Cast. John was known for his humor and loved to joke around with everyone.
He is survived by his children, John S. Bates of Bay City, Kimberly (Brad) Sylvester of Auburn, Roy (Rwaida) Bates of Saginaw; two step-sons, Gary Williams of Bay City and Robert Williams of Lakeland FL; sister, Estel Maki of Wixom; twin brother, Joe Bates of Troy; many nieces and nephews. Also surviving are his grandchildren, Gary, Brittany, Anthony, Michael, Elexia, Kalysta, Lee, and Rami. He was predeceased on May 7, 2000 by his wife Patricia A. Bates.
Following cremation, a veteran's memorial service and inurnment for immediate family will take place at Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly MI.
