Obituary of Hilda Eleanor Owens

Owens, Hilda Eleanor St. Charles, MI Our Mother, Grandmother, Great-Grandmother, Aunt, and Sister passed away Sunday, August 23, 2015, at age 93. Hilda was born October 11, 1921 to James M..and Theresa May Hunt and had resided in St Charles most of her life. She graduated from St Charles H.S. in 1940 and trained to be a Nursing Assistant during WWII. She retired from Thompson Products, Inc. in St Charles in 1987 and enjoyed her retirement, including Friday morning breakfasts with her cousins, rarely missing a Friday! She also volunteered and then worked in the cafeteria at Hartley Nature Center afterward. Having never driven a car, she rode her bike everywhere until she was in her mid eighties. She told everyone who would listen that the first part of the Saginaw Valley Rail Trail was put from her street toward St Charles just for her! It made her bicycle trips to town much safer as she no longer had to cross M-52 to get there. She loved nature and loved her home because she could have her dogs and cats and be close to the woods so she could take walks to the creek whenever she wanted. She is survived by her children, Sandra (Robert) Hauxwell, Raymond (Beth) Owens, and Susan Owens Welch. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Colby (Chris) Benbow, Kara (Mike) Steinhour, Erin Welch, Emily Owens, Sarah Owens, Martin and Emilie Sulic, and her beloved Great Grandchildren, Ana and Jake Benbow, and Ivan, Max, and Alec Sulic. She is survived by a Sister, Evelyn Stewart as well as special niece, Karen (Ron) Bass and many other nieces and nephews who were dear to her also. Hilda was predeceased by nephews Gilbert Hunt and Charles Erskine, Great nephews Darwin Potter and Jack Holzhausen, and by brothers Frank, Pete (Ralph), Bill, and Jim (Hound) Hunt. Sisters, Reva Hunt, Louise Erskine, and Verona Fowler. Also brothers in law, Archie Fowler, Carl Stewart, Ray Erskine and sisters in law Josephine Hunt, Doris Hunt. The family is thankful and will be forever grateful for the blessings by nurses, social workers, and others from Saginaw Senior Care & Rehab Center, A & D Home Health Care, and Heartland Hospice, who made her final days more comfortable and allowed her to die peacefully in her own home with her family by her side. No service is planned at this time. In lieu of flowers, those considering an expression of sympathy are asked to consider memorial contributions to Hartley Nature Center or the charity of the donor's choice.
