Thomas Edward Nehil was born in Midland on April 21, 1925, the son of Thomas E. and Lillian (Muellenbach) Nehil. His siblings included four sisters: Helen Pickens (deceased), Katherine Ann Dexter, Mary Margaret McCann (deceased) and Norma Camp.
In 1951, he married Phyllis Ann Roberts. They were blessed with five children: Thomas (Gail) of Kalamazoo, Kevin (Amy) of Midland, Ann Marie (Keith) of Cincinnati, Catherine (Sharon) of East Lansing, and Christopher of Midland. He also had twelve grandchildren and eight greatgrandchildren.
Tom graduated from Cranbrook High School and Oberlin College. He also attended the
University of Chicago and the Sorbonne in Paris. After high school graduation he joined the Marine Corps. Joining Dow Corning in 1952 he became part of the newly formed International Department. His career with Dow Corning included international assignments in Argentina, Bahamas, and Italy. He spoke fluent Spanish, Italian and French. Always a great Midland booster, he was proud to be a descendant of a Midland pioneer (prior to1875) family. He always felt privileged to have enjoyed a full lifetime with friends and family at the Benmark Club and the Birches on Wixom Lake.
In addition, Tom always considered his years as a professor at Northwood University as some of his happiest. He retired at the age of 82 after teaching for 24 years. He authored in 1987, 'A Cultural Guide to the Global Village'. He was a guest lecturer in the Netherlands, Czech Republic and France.
