Ronald George Atwater, age 78, of AuGres, MI died peacefully at his home after a long struggle with Dementia and Alzheimers. He is survived by his loving partner of 28 years, Penny (Didier) Kurchak, her children, Patty, Adam and Ginny, his brother, Harold Atwater, of Camarillo, CA, sisters Dorothy (Vernon) Harmon of Bridgeport, MI and Arlene Atwater and close friend Linda Johnson, both of Lansing, MI. He had a special 'grand-father' relationship with Michael (Lauren), Rachel, James, Krystal, Terrance and Evan and had several nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death, by his daughter, Madonna Jammer, his mother, Genevieve (Woods), his father, Harold A. Atwater and infant sister, Evelyn Toby. Ron was born in Bay City, MI on June 21, 1938. He began his working career by serving in the US Navy. He took a job as a wheelsman for Standard Oil and then went on to Delta College where he received training in Advanced Criminal Investigation. He became a Police Officer with the City of Saginaw, earning several acknowledgements, including a Distinctive Service Award for Professionalism and retired in 1990 after 23 years of service. With his social personality, in the late 90's he took a job as a Walmart Greeter in Bay City, MI. He later established Great Lakes Marine Surveyors as he enjoyed working with boats. He was very skilled with woodworking, built a home and loved living near the water, where he spent hours boating and fishing. He was a member of the Saginaw Fraternal Order of Police, Lodge #105 and was a life member of the Loyal Order of Moose.
A memorial service will be held at 3:00 P.M. on Friday August 26, 2016 at Hyatt-Ewald Funeral Home, 700 N Monroe ST in Bay City, MI. Visitors may pay their respects at the funeral home on Friday from 12:00 noon to 4:00 PM. Special thanks to Compassus Hospice & Palliative Care for their kindness and professionalism, also to Sandi from Senior Services of Omer. Ron's favorite place to eat was McDonalds, so In lieu of flowers, it is asked to please 'pay it forward' next time you go, and make someone's day a little special by purchasing a meal for a stranger.
