Obituary of Emil H. Schmidt

Schmidt, Emil H. Midland, Michigan Emil H. Schmidt, 104, born 5-14-1912, went to be with our Lord and Savior on 10-22-2016. He was born to George & Wilhelmina (Schwab) Schmidt at the family farm in Frankenlust Township, MI. Emil graduated from Bay City Central High School & went to college where he earned his teaching certificate. He served in The US Army, 236th Artillery Unit, from 1941 to 1945 during WWII. His Unit fought through 150 air raids and received a Presidential Citation for Enemy Action. Emil was a head Radar Cracker and served with the Malaria Control Unit. He enjoyed sharing stories about his time in the South Pacific. His unit sailed on the Queen Mary after it was converted to a military transport. Upon his return from the service, he worked at, and retired from Autolite/Prestolite in Bay City MI. Emil was a Weblo Scout Leader, a member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars, and had been honored as Man of the Year by St. Paul's Men's Club. Emil was a guest at history classes to speak with students about his World War II experiences. He taught neighborhood kids woodworking and was a private music teacher. His favorite activities were playing golf, bowling, hunting, card playing, dancing and socializing with his family and many friends. Emil's survivors include 4 children, Dan (Jody) Schmidt, Wendy Faber (Robert Kelley), Connie (Michael) Behm, Joel Schmidt, 11 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great grandchildren, a brother, Herbert Schmidt, and a sister, Stella Peoples, He was predeceased by his parents, the mother of his children, Jacqueline (Bleck) Kohnert, one son, Rickey E. Schmidt, one grandchild, Barbara Schmidt and siblings Alvin, Adolph, Hatti (Kloha) Murphy, and Gertrude Engelhardt. The family wishes to thank the entire staff at Stratford Pines who provided Emil with excellent care. A memorial service will be held at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 6100 Westside Saginaw Rd, Bay City, MI, on November 9, 2016 with family visitation at 1:00 p.m until the time of the Service at 2:00 p.m. To sign online guestbook visit www.cremationsocietymidmi.com.
