Obituary of Betty J. Verbeke
Verbeke, Betty
Essexville, Michigan
formerly of St. Helen, Michigan
On the gloriously beautiful, warm and sunny day of June 7, 2017, Betty passed into eternity without a moment of fear or pain at Hampton Manor Assisted Living in Hampton Township. Betty Jane Morse was the baby of the family born to Harvey and Harriet (Hattie Carman) Morse on November 21, 1929 in Bay City. She often spoke of being a child of the depression and learned frugality and to cherish her possessions at a young age. Betty married a returning WWII veteran, Albert W. Verbeke, on December 8, 1945 and they shared 63 years together until Al's death in 2008. On their retirement they moved to their cottage at the end of a rural and peaceful road in St. Helen, Michigan. She and Al became involved in the Senior Citizen's organizations and were once elected "senior citizen king and queen" of the area's annual parade. She also volunteered with Meals on Wheels, and at her local election precinct and was a lifelong lover of bingo, reading and cross word puzzles. Betty loved her little home among the woods for 33 years until health issues necessitated her to move back to Bay City a few years ago. Betty is survived by a son, Lloyd (Susan) Verbeke of Essexville and their children, Dusty and Betty Jo; daughter in law, Elaine Verbeke of Kawkawlin and her children Gard and Jason, several great grandchildren, 4 nieces and a nephew. She was predeceased by her son Albert H. Verbeke in 2004. In addition to her parents she was also predeceased by her siblings, Blanch Nagy, Dorothy Fulco, Ruby Hock, Lloyd G. Morse and 2 infant sisters, Ruth and Hazel. Betty often stated her desire and request that there be no viewing nor service and that following cremation her ashes be interred alongside Al's in Richardson Cemetery in AuSable Township. Betty resided at Hampton Manor the last several months of her life where she received not only excellent physical care and very pleasant amenities but also the affection and friendship of the staff and residents. She very often stated how happy, safe and loved she felt during those last months. A heartfelt thank you to all.
