Obituary of Richard "Doug" Shannon
SHANNON, RICHARD DOUGLAS "DOUG"
FAIRGROVE, MICHIGAN
Old Man Shannon got his wish to relocate to Brookside Cemetery on August 2, 2017. He often said the only problem with going to Brookside was he had too many birthdays before getting there.
A lifelong farmer, he was born November 18, 1930 to Rodney and Elsie (LeValley) Shannon and lived his entire life within one mile of his birthplace. He was a graduate of Akron High School.
Doug married the love of his life, Dolores Ann Birdsall on March 1, 1952. He always said that day was the beginning of his grand adventure of life. Doug and Dolores were blessed with four children, Wendy (Terry) Houthoofd of Akron, Douglas (Marilyn Rohlfs) Shannon of Fairgrove, Susan (Richard) Metcalf of Midland and Julie (Mike) Pope of Christiana, Tennessee. They also had nine grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren with one more on the way.
Doug had a wonderful life. He worked hard and played hard. He enjoyed motorcycles, playing pool and winning at cards. Doug and Dolores loved to dance, and were very good at it. They frequently travelled the country in their motorhomes.
Doug had a used car dealer's license and went to auto auctions to purchase cars for friends and relatives. In 1974 he learned to fly and enjoyed many trips in his airplane. Most of all he loved farming. His favorite vehicle was his combine. That's where he was happiest.
Doug was sharp to the end, never losing his sense of humor. His attendants will probably tell you he also never lost his ornery streak.
Doug had 5 sisters, Donna (Wendall) Pafford, Jennifer (aka Mert) Periard, twins Marie (Keith) Goslin) & Mary Demetris, and Sherry (Paul) Vaughn. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dolores, his parents and his sister, Mary.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, August 5, 2017 @ 2:00 P.M. at the Wisner Methodist Church. Memorials are to be directed to the choice of the donor. No flowers, please.
