Obituary of LaDurin "Doc" Sherwood
LaDurin "Doc" Sherwood, 96, of Midland, died Sunday, Sept. 3, 2017 at his home, surrounded by loved ones. The son of the late Perl and Nina Sherwood was born April 29, 1921 in Midland.
Doc was a World War II veteran and received the Bronze Star, Combat Infantry Badge, America Theater Ribbon, Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon, overseas service bar, service stripe, Good Conduct Medal and several others.
He joined the Michigan Army National Guard when he was honorably discharged from the Army. In the National Guard he received the Legion of Meril and several other commendations. He served 29 years, four months and five days in the National Guard before retiring. He served his country and state for a total of 32 years, eight months and two days.
On March 29, 1963, Doc married Helen Horning. Doc had worked at The Dow Chemical Co. and was very active in the company until his retirement. Doc loved to travel. He and Helen had been to Europe several times, but traveled the most in the United States. They lived in Scottsdale, Ariz. for 23 years after retiring and one year in Grand Island, Fla. before moving back to Midland to be near family. He enjoyed bowling, playing the organ and the harmonica, and helping other people and making them laugh.
Mr. Sherwood is survived by son, Curtis Sherwood of Arizona; daughters, Cheryl Eastman of Midland, Cynthia (Russell) Austin of Bay City; step-daughter, Martha Davison of Traverse City; cousin, Eleane "Tootie" Wetherell of Sanford; caregiver Kathy Vesterfelt of Sanford who has become part of our family over the past five years and her family, Adam and Amanda, Judy Berryhill and Barb Austin; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Sherwood; sister, Elen Burwick; daughter, Candace Buckey; son, Chris Sherwood; son-in-law, Phillip Davison; step-son, Kenneth Horning; and grandsons, Kevin Sherwood and Byron Eastman.
In accordance to his wishes, Doc has been cremated. A memorial gathering will be held from 1-4 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 24, 2017 at American Legion Post #165, 5111 Hedgewood Dr., Midland, 48640.
