Obituary of Robert "Bob" Gustave Eggert

Robert(Bob) Gustave Eggert, 84, of Caro, unexpectedly passed away on January 4 2018. Robert was born on May 25, 1933 in Port Hope, to the late Theodore and Helene (Schultz) Eggert and was a 1950 graduate from Port Hope High School. In April 1952, Robert entered the Army and was stationed in Korea with the A Btry, 99th AAA where he earned the Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal. In April 1954 he was honorably discharged from the regular Army and entered into the Army Reserve while working at the Port Hope Telephone Company in Port Hope. In February 1958 he married Mary Ann Nickels, from Harbor Beach. Less than a year later Robert enlisted in the United States Coast Guard and was assigned to the USCGC Acacia (WLB 406), Buoy Tender, Search and Rescue, and Icebreaker in Port Huron. Upon completion of Aviation Machinist Mate training in Elizabeth City NC, he was assigned to Coast Guard Air Station Traverse City. Following his final military assignment at USCG Group Cape Hatteras in Buxton, NC Robert separated from the service in 1969 and returned to Michigan. Robert was a lifelong member of VFW Post 4164 in Caro Robert was employed by Michigan Bell Telephone, Stafford Telephone Company, Michigama Telephone Company, and Continental Telephone Company in Caro before becoming an owner/operator within the trucking industry. He started his career in 1975 driving for Bekins Van Lines, during summers taking his kids with him to see America. He later hauled farm equipment with Diamond Transport for a few years before joining his brother hauling freight for Courier Newsome. Robert last drove for Central Transport until retiring in 1996. Robert is survived by his wife of 59 years Mary Ann, sons Terry Eggert of Caro, Gregory Eggert(Judith) of Caro; and a daughter, Debra McLeod of Saginaw. Four grandchildren, Donald McLeod Jr.(Tracy) of Caro, Anthony McLeod of Caro, Jonathan McLeod of Caro, and Theron Eggert of Caro; two brothers, Arnold Eggert of Port Hope, and Merl Eggert(Patsy) of Port Hope He was preceded in his death by his parents, Theodore and Helene Eggert, his sister Alma Engle, and brothers Wilbur Eggert, Erwin Eggert. According to his wishes Robert will be cremated and entombed at the Great Lakes National Cemetery.
