Obituary of Harvey D. Farrand

Farrand, Harvey D. Saginaw, MI 48604 Passed away on April 30, 2018 at the age of 86 years at the Cartwright Hospice Center after a lengthy battle with Parkinson's disease. He was born on November 12, 1931 to the late George R. Farrand and Helena E. Stewart Farrand in Iosco County, Michigan. He served as an Elder with The Community of Christ, Saginaw, Michigan and was the publisher for the Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 159 newsletter. He graduated from Saginaw High School in 1950, earning a full scholarship to GMI Institute (which is now Kettering University). He joined the U.S. Naval Air Force in 1955, was assigned to flight training in Pensacola, Florida, transferred to Corpus Christi, Texas, and then to a Heavy Attack Squadron stationed in Whidbey Island, Washington, spending some of his service time on the U.S.S. Midway Aircraft Carrier. He worked at Grey Iron Foundry and then as a Senior Drafting Engineer, responsible for a substantial portion of the building of Nodular Iron Foundry, retiring from Nodular Iron in 1986. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating, snowmobiling, motorcycling, bowling, square dancing, flying aircraft, bridge, golf, and working on engines. He completed construction of an experimental aircraft in his garage, which he constructed from a kit and flew in 2004, as it was his life's dream to fly again. He is survived by his loving wife, Joann Oswald Mock of 14 years; three daughters, Cynthia K. Collison, Diedre L. Miller, and Ariane K. (Richard) Jones-LaBelle; three grandsons, William K.C. (Ann) Jones, Tyler J. Collison, and Daniel R. Miller II; three granddaughters, Mardi K. (Kathleen) Del-Jones-O'Boyle, Samantha L. (Brian) Ramey, and Morgan N. Miller; one great-granddaughter, Olivia L. Ramey; four stepdaughters, Carol Kanarek, Laura Brownell, Beverlee (Gary) Malecke, and Cynthia (Salvatore) Faraglia; a sister-in-law, Carolyn Farrand; cousins; niece; nephews; step-grandchildren; and one step-great grandchild. He was predeceased by his two brothers, Glen in 1927 and Ralph in 2007; his first wife, Evelyn V. Diener/Kessel/Farrand in 2001; in-laws, many cousins, two nephews, and extended family members. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 A.M., May 17, 2018 at The Community of Christ, 300 N. Center Road, Saginaw MI, with Earl Bennett officiating. Friends and relatives may visit with the family from 10:00 A.M. until the time of service and afterwards during a planned luncheon.
