Obituary of Donald "Mr. Sensational" Gene Brockway

Brockway, Donald Gene Durand MI (formerly of Burton/Flint) Donald, "Mr. Sensational", age 91, went home to the Lord on June 7, 2018. Donald was born January 26, 1927 in Flint MI to the late Frances (Harper) and Earl Haskell Brockway. He was a WWII Veteran. Donald attended Hope College in Holland, MI. He married Mary Leone Malott in 1951 and was hired into General Motors Corporation that same year. He retired from GM's Hydra-Matic Plant in 1987. His multiple interests had him volunteering with the Boy Scouts of America – Tall Pine Council where he helped establish scout training at Camp Tapico, and was ultimately awarded the Silver Beaver Award, the highest honor a boy scout can receive. Don was also a Big Brother for the Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Greater Flint, served for 12 years on the Bentley Community Schools Board of Education and Athletic Boosters, amongst other philanthropic organizations. After retirement, he and Mary devoted their time to their children and grandchildren. Their high moral standards helped shape the lives of many. In Don's later years, he became especially active in his local church, serving as elder and greeter. All of his life, Don was upbeat, believing in giving an enthusiastic and warm greeting to all and was known as "Mr. Sensational!" He always had a kind word for others and never spoke negatively about anyone. He was an inspiration to many and leaves a legacy of love and acceptance to all who knew him. Don was preceded in death by Mary, his beloved wife of 45 years. She joined the Lord in 1996. He leaves behind his children: Dave (Marcia) Brockway of Anna Maria, Florida, Nancy (Dennis) Roy of Oscoda, Steve (Erin) Brockway of Davison, Mary Yarbrough of Durand, Cathy (Jamie) Colston of Tanner, Alabama; grandchildren, Nicole (John) Ditzel, Rachelle (Samuel) Cornwell, Evan (Monica) Roy, MacGregor (TBD) Roy, Justin (Marsha) Brockway, Abbie and Naomi Brockway, James (Sandy) Yarbrough, Kate (Ben) Jonkman, Jenny (Ray) Erickson, Fallon and Lindsay McLeod; numerous great and great-great grandchildren; special friends Pastor Don and Debbie White, Bob and Carol Smith, Cheryl and Sam Mogg. He will be greatly missed. A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, July 20, 2018, at 11:00 AM, at Flint Memorial Park Cemetery, 9506 N. Dort Highway, Mt. Morris, MI 48458. A luncheon will follow at Light of Faith Fellowship Church, 405 S. Oak Street, Durand, MI 48429.
