Obituary of Tom Lee Metcalf

Tom Lee Metcalf died peacefully at his residence surrounded by family and friends on Saturday, May 25, 2019 at the age of 89. He has been suffering from a chronic illness for the past three years. Born on April 30, 1930, he was a lifelong resident of Midland, MI and a member of Memorial Presbyterian Church. As a student at Midland High School he was an accomplished athlete, participating in basketball and other sports. He was a member of the Chemic Basketball team that landed the first Class A Regional Championship in school history with a 41-25 win over Bay City Central on March 15, 1948. Continuing with his love of sports, he coached Pee Wee Football and refereed at the Midland Community Center for many years. Tom retired from The Dow Corning Medical Plant in 1985. He was a part of the cutting edge fabrication of rubber silicone medical parts, pacemakers and prosthesis. Tom served in the Navy from 1948 until 1952. While stationed in Narragansett, Rhode Island he met and married his wife Margaret who survives him. In addition, he is survived by his children, Linda (Harry) Guenther, residents of Mt. Pleasant, MI, Laura (Joe) Yatch, and Loren Metcalf residents of Midland. He also leaves behind four grandchildren, Stephanie (Bill) Nietzke, Marissa Scherf, Joshua (Carrie) Yatch and Rachelle (Mazin) Adam; nine great-grandchildren, Malachi Lyon, Nevaeh and Elisha Scherf, Mia Nietzke, Zayne and Zoya Adam, Cole, Shelby and Owen Yatch; and two sisters, Ruth Mitchell and Ann (Dick) Votaw. Tom was preceded in death by his parents, George Francis and Jean Hill Metcalf; grandson, Derek Guenther; brothers, Bob, Ed and Bill Metcalf; and sisters, Donna Branthover and Margaret Harvey. Tom will be greatly missed by his family and many friends. A memorial service will be held on June 11, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at Memorial Presbyterian Church, 1310 Ashman Street, Midland, MI. Visitation will take place from 10:00 a.m. until time of service with a luncheon immediately following the service in Mayton Hall.
