Dena was one of my favorite patients, I saw her every 6 months for her dental cleanings. I always enjoyed our talks. She was such a positive person and enjoyed life. I will never forget the big hug I got the last time I saw her in April. She was so happy to hear my son was getting married in 2 weeks, she wish them all the happiness in the world. She will be dearly missed.

I read the words others wrote about Dena. She was all of those, friendly, loving, fun, a listener and more. A couple traits of the more were that she was strong and brave to tackle projects, subjects, that brought about awareness of humanities need to respect others. We met when our children were little, watched them grow and then life took us down different roads. But she was and is still in my heart. I am John's cousin residing in Austin,Texas. I was blessed to meet Dena as a young teenager . She sparked my interest in medicine . She had the gift of listening and singled me out of the family crowd . She was compassionate towards my bother , Bob, a wounded Viet Nam vet. She felt his deep "pain". When John brought Dena home to our family she instantly became one of us kids. Not a sister-in-law but a sister, a blessing to our family.
Dena had a gentle, loving spirit. She gave everything she did, her best, never backing down.
Dena gave the best hugs ever. When she hugged you there was no doubt that you had been hugged, a hug full of love.
There was never a doubt that John and Dena were soul mates and brought out the best in each other.

I met Dena at CMU when she took classes toward her MA. Who could miss that smile? We both taught English there and enjoyed mutual friends and interests. Over the years, before and after retirement, we and our husbands and dear friend Sandy Dullinger made a point of getting together around Christmas for a long lunch at Cracker Barrel in Bay City. It was something truly special to look forward to every year.
Last year, I had the great pleasure of working with Dena on her memoir For Your Country. Dena was a modest person who had never detailed her experiences as an Army nurse in Japan during the Vietnam war. I was humbled by all my friend had accomplished with skill and grit as a young adult in the face of enormous responsibility and pressure. She was not one to give up when life became difficult.
Dena, I will always remember you and cherish our years of beautiful friendship.

When Dena found out my son suffered from PTSD, she compiled a mound of research articles and got them to me in a few days. She always remembered to ask about him and his journey through his personal hell. I missed her so much when she left quilt club.

Dena is such an inspiration. She had such a fulfilled life! She did really great things to help other people but was still able to stop and enjoy the small things too. When I started dating her grandson Andrew, the first time I met her she hugged me and kissed me on the cheek and said "take good care of my grandson." I told her I would and I will keep that promise by not only taking care of her grandson but of her second great grandson to be. And you better believe Andrew and my baby will know everything about what a wonderful lady she was. She will forever remain in our hearts and memories.
