We will never forget the holiday weekend when we were sadly sitting on our boat that wouldn't run when Bruce and Sita came by in their dinghy. Bruce volunteered to "take a look at it" - about an hour later the engine was running again. The only payment he would accept was a 6-pack of Miller Light. He was our trusted mechanic for about 20 years, until he closed his shop. Rest In Peace, Bruce - we won't forget you.

Very sorry to hear of Bruce's passing. He was a very special person and will be missed by all who knew him. I will certainly miss the great times we spent together racing the many Red Fox Regatta's in Charlevoix. My brother David, introduced me to Bruce & Sita, who he sailed with on Saginaw Bay. I thank him for that because being introduced to Bruce & Sita was a gift. Meeting two wonderful people who shared their sailing expertise with me, the true rookie. Bruce had a special way of teaching you with out teaching. He was a man of few words. But when he spoke, you better listen closely because he didn't waste those words. He had the patience of Jobe teaching me the ropes and turning me into a real sailor. The time we spent with Bruce, Sita, John & Carol Lucas & my brother David were the best sailing experiences one could ask for. I only hope I can sail with him again on the other side.
Terry Hiser.

My deepest condolences to Sita and all Bruce's family. He was many things - primarily, he was a good friend and a great human being!
I suspect when he met St. Peter at the pearly gates the first thing he said was 'Pull my finger'. :innocent:

One weekend Carol couldn't get the boat's diesel engine to start. It would mean a weekend without sailing. Hearing the engine turning over without starting, motoring by Bruce stopped and asked if he could help. After an hour, he got the engine to turn over. He never billed her nor asked for any payment. He was that kind of a gentleman. After that, we always took our cars to Bruce and Sita's garage and enjoyed their company sailing at Charlievoix's Red Fox. After closing their garage, we had dinner with Sita and Bruce at the Bay City Yacht Club. Bruce ate slowly not speaking. He served his clients, our country in Viet Nam as a tunnel rat, and was a primary force in establishing and maintaining the local sailboat racing community. His efforts have benefitted all of us.

Bruce was a cornerstone in the foundation of the Bay City Sailing community. My decades long enjoyment of sailboat racing was fostered in large part by Bruce Compton. A great competitor, a true sportsman, gentleman and friend, who was always ready to lend a hand...to anyone...anytime.
I will always cherish the many happy memories I have of Bruce, Sita, and their racing crews, both on and off the water. Whether you've sailed with, or raced against Bruce, I suppose it would be impossible for any of us to step on a sailboat without bringing a little bit of Bruce with us on the trip.
My thoughts and prayers to all of Bruce's family and friends. I don't have to tell any of you how much he'll be missed.
Best regards,
Bill O'Rourke

Bruce was a very, very sweet loveable man. He was also a very good uncle to my son Max Lynch when we came to visit years ago. One of Max's fondest childhood memories was when Uncle Bruce let Max drive their small yard mower/tractor around the big grassy yard. Max was deliriously happy to be in the driver's seat for the first time, until he accidentally ran into one of Sita and Bruce's newly planted trees.... Max was only 10 or 11 at the time. I was mortified, but Bruce was forgiving. Uncle Bruce was very kind to Max who is now a grown man.
I am sad to hear the Bruce has passed on....

Bruce was my brother-in-law. I knew him to be a very considerate and gentle guy. I had no idea he had been a Marine Sergeant. I always admired his genius as a classic farm raised midwestern master mechanic. Not many of those left in the world. Bruce could repair any kind of mechanical thing from combines to airplanes to boats to motorcycles to any kind of car... What a guy. Our deep condolences to his wife Sita and Bruce's family.

Carla and I have wonderful memories of fun times with Bruce and Sita. We enjoyed great movies and dining with them. We had much fun "kayahacking" with them and all the Frankenmuth flyins where Bruce and I flew our planes in. Bruce certainly was one of the best car mechanics I had ever dealt with especially when he repaired my "tank". I know Carla and I and Sita will always cherish happy memories like these.
