Obituary of Edward John Neithercut

Neithercut, Edward J. Bay View, Michigan Edward John Neithercut passed away on Saturday, October 12, 2019 at the age of 95 after a long illness. He was born February 25, 1924 to Charles and Hazel Neithercut in Flint, Michigan. Ed graduated from Flint Northern High School in 1941 and attended the University of Michigan where he participated in the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps. He enlisted in the US Navy in 1943 and during World War II, he served as officer-in-charge of the USS Brambling (AMC 39), a mine sweeper in the Panama Canal Zone. After the war, Ed graduated from Michigan Law School and he was admitted to the Michigan Bar Association in 1950. Soon thereafter he joined the firm of Neithercut and Neithercut, the law practice his father and uncle William founded in 1917. Ed married Elizabeth ("Libby") Koegel in 1950, and they were happily married for 69 years until her death in August of this year. For fifty years, Ed practiced law in Flint and was a long-time supporter of both the Genesee County Bar Association (where he served a term as President) and the Association's foundation. He specialized in corporate and real estate law, and he was proud of the many decades he served as the counsel for the charter townships of Flint and Genesee. He was the long-time Chairman of Genesee Merchants Bank & Trust and helped manage its successful sale to the National Bank of Detroit in 1985. Ed also served as a valued Board Member and Officer of the Koegel Meat Company, the Anna Paulina Foundation, and Sunset Hills Association. During his career in Flint, he was active in the Flint Junior Chamber of Commerce and Court Street Methodist Church. He served as a board member of the McLaren Regional Medical Center (25 years), the YMCA, the University of Michigan-Flint's Citizens Advisory Committee, and Court Street Village Nonprofit Housing Corporation. In 2002, Ed received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from Kettering University. Since 1953, Ed and Libby spent their summers at their beloved cottage in Bay View, a Chautauqua on Michigan's Little Traverse Bay. He cherished the regular Sunday-night family dinners in Bay View. When not working, Ed loved woodworking, travel, skiing and, in later years, work in the garden. After moving to Traverse City in 2002, Ed and Libby volunteered at the Central Methodist Church, and they delivered Meals on Wheels to the elderly until he was 89. He served as treasurer of his condo association and as finance director of the Bay View waterfront. During his entire life, Ed was devoted to his family, his church, and his community. He was a modest, kind, self-effacing man, who led by example. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Edward is survived by his children Mark Neithercut (Helen), Carol Neithercut (Nancy Craig), David Neithercut (Suzu) and Peter Neithercut (Susan); his four grandchildren, Emiko Brook (Parker), Benjamin Neithercut, Rachel Neithercut and Kristen Neithercut; and his great-granddaughter, Yukiko Elizabeth Brook.
