Hi Nancy, I did not know you two met at YMCA basketball, at least some good came from our sad attempt at competitive sports. You'll be pleased to know that Mom passed her social justice desires on to our generation. I hope all is well with you. Thanks for filling in just a touch more of her history for us.

Jim, Mom always spoke quite highly of you and recalled your friendship in the most generous terms. Thank you for the kind words, they would have made her blush (not easy to do!).

MJ & I were childhood friends & roomed together in Ann Arbor after HS. She was bright, fun, funny ,creative and beautiful. I love that she followed in her Mom's footsteps & crocheted. I Recall that MJ won best Halloween costume (age 7/8) when she came as an Asian Flu bug complete with pipe cleaner antennae, that she & Eleanor created. She was proud of her work but proudest of her family & kids & grand kids & great grand kids for whom she had boundless love.It is a huge loss for us but would like to think that she is being welcomed in heaven by her dear parents & brother & friend, Linda Carlson. My thoughts & prayers are with Linda & her dear family.

MJ was a dear friend and I will miss her presence in my life! We met through the HMGP when I was a graduate student. She took care of me like a second mom and made my time in the program more special. My thoughts and prayers are with you all at this difficult time.

I have many wonderful memories of MJ, but the one that comes to the fore is the huge crush I had on her in 9th grade. My, my, how I was smitten. Lucky for me, that crush grew into a wonderful, trusting and loving friendship that lasted a lifetime.

MJ and I began our friendship 40 years ago when our children played youth basketball at the YMCA in Bay City,MI. I was drawn to her sense of humor and warmth and kindness. We became instant friends and shared a lot of our struggles raising children on our own. MJ loved her children above all else and sacrificed a l lot to make sure they grew into strong, independent, caring individuals. MJ and I had many long, deep conversations about social injustice and the need for more compassion in the world.. I was shocked and deeply saddened to hear of her passing. She would have made a great "old lady" sitting in her rocking chair teasing the great grandkids. My heart goes out to her children and wherever she is may she look back at her life and Know she made a difference and that she will live on in the hearts of many.

Once in a rare moment in a lucky lifetime, can we meet someone with quiet strength, broad compassion and deep wisdom. Maybe it was the hours 'watching the waves' growing up? but you sowed smartness where-ever you went. MJ you will be missed.

Very sad to hear of MJ's passing. I knew her well during the early years of the HMGP (before it became the HMGGP). In many ways she was the foundation of the program, making everyone feel that there was a caring, smart, reliable human there whenever one was needed. She made my job much easier and will always be a shining star of the HMGP.

I loved MJ as many others did. She was always welcoming and happy to see me when I popped into her office. Once she shared that she wanted a motorcycle and we discussed this at length, the ups and downs of such. One Saturday morning I met MJ and took her for a rip on my Harley, she loved the experience and revelled in the time we had that morning.
She was the light for our program, our mother and our friend. We will always remember her contributions to our lives and her kind way.

MJ is/was one of my dearest friends. I have known her since she moved to Colorado. She worked with me in my sewing business so we spent many early, early morning hours sewing and chatting about all things in life and especially about politics. Even after she moved away we would do text chats as she was up and functional an hour earlier than I was and in the privacy of early morning, we were solving world problems.
I am shocked and heartbroken as her family is at this too soon passing.
When she left Colorado she gave me her entire fabric stash (or at least I thought she did!)
One piece was a fleece length of the Ninja Turtles. I'm not sure which adult child or grandchild got the first cutting. But when I went through radiation treatments I was supposed to bedeck myself in those horrible hospital textiles that feel like tractor tires recycled. Didn't need the torture before the torture treatments so I picked up the Ninja Turtles and tied the fleece as a wrap around myself And I proudly trounced down the halls with the strength of a Ninja warrior, albeit a cartoon, for all to see that I would not bow down to cancer. Plus it made everyone smile and laugh. And it felt like she was fighting with me and giving me a hug.
How the heck did this happen to my friend? But her legacy lives on in her children and the children of her children Single handedly she raised three children to be responsible, socially conscious, adventurous, family loving adults. Her greatest accomplishment. I am so proud to be one of her friends.
Christine Hoyt, Denver
