I wish to give my Condolences to Mary's sisters, brothers, all relatives and friends.
I met Mary in June 1981 when she and I were Stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
Mary, I, and many others at Fort Bragg became family. When you seen Mary you would see me, and our Best Friend, Renette Clemons (Brown) together.
In 1984 I departed Fort Bragg and We three kept in touch. During the next 36 years the three of us would have three way telephone calls. and at the end of each call we would always say "I Love you".
Last June 2019 while I was visiting in Washington, DC, I met up with Mary (of course it was at the casino) and we couldn't say it enough how much we Loved our Friendship and talks.
My message is from 1st John 1:5 "God is Light, and in him is no Darkness at all".
Mary was a Very dear Friend and I Loved her.

I met Mary in 1986, we served in the same battalion in Hawaii together. Her office was on one side of the hall and mine was on the other. She would coach me if I had a problem and she had high expectations for me to follow through to solve it. I really respected her and her clear view of the world. When I found out I was pregnant, she got together with 2 of our friends to give me a baby shower! She would gladly babysit my son (Dominic) and even suggest that my husband and I go out, just so she could babysit. After I left the military, we would reconnect every few years. It was more difficult back then; we did not have cell phones and we had to work to track each other down! She might be the most genuine person I have ever known. She was ornery, stubborn, truthful, kind, generous and just a wonderful soul. I will miss you, Mary.

My Aunt Mary was only16yrs old when I was born. I consider myself lucky to have watched her grow into the beautiful person that touched so many lives and was so dearly loved.
I have so many memories of her, some are funny, others are heartwarming but all are very precious and I will cherish them forever. Knowing Mary for only 47 years wasn't long enough. I prayed for a miracle but GOD had different plans and called her home.
I am learning to replace my heartache with memories of our long talks filled with laughter and dreams of winning the lottery. We never ended a call without saying "I love you" and ironically that was our last words to each other. She was everything that an aunt should be and so much more.
Until we see each other again...
"Rest peacefully my favorite warrior, life will never be the same without you"

I first met Mary while stationed in Hawaii. Then, we ended up at FT Hope together as she became my supervisor. My fondest memory of Mary is how much she love kids. There were time when we had to work late. My wife also worked nights which made this difficult. So, I would bring my son and daughter in to work and Mary would watch them. She would sit with them for hours keeping them occupied by playing with them.
I got to visit and sit with Mary a couple years ago. After all she had been through, she was the same Mary I knew at FT Hood. Rest In Peace Mary.

Twenty years ago, 19 yr old me checked into Fort Hood, TX, and met the person who would become one of the most important people in my life, SSG Mary Curry (do not use her middle name unless you want to get the middle finger!). She was ornery, and sharp-tongued, and stubborn, and did not tolerate fools... but revered among her soldiers and our entire company as the only NCO that would stand up to leadership for any injustice or grievance... and I was determined to make her love me.
We ended up sticking like glue, and spent the next years learning from each other as we both transitioned off of active duty, and I transitioned from college, to marriage, and then to motherhood. She went home to help take care of her parents, and work at a boot camp for wayward youth. From TX, to KY, to MI, to NC, to VA, and everywhere in between, there isn't a time that we didn't stop at the closest yard sale or casino or greasy spoon (diner) to make the most of the time we had together doing things we loved.
Somewhere along the way, we gave up trying to explain our close friendship to outsiders, and Mary coined the loving and hilarious 'daughter-I-never-wanted' moniker (DINW) explanation, which seemed to make sense to others. :slightly_smiling_face: Our fave for each other was EIFF (ebony and ivory forever friends).
Seven years ago, she moved here to Northern Virginia to manage the Final Salute house, a transitional home for homeless women veterans and their children, and became an instant grandmother to my children Ethan and Zoe, but also to every child that crossed her path - while Mary despised having pictures of herself taken, most of those that I have I managed to snap over the years where when she was cuddling a baby, or kneeling down beside one toddler or another to have a deep conversation about the leaf or acorn they'd collected together.
Five years ago, she was diagnosed with Stage IV breast cancer, and the doctors told her she could have as little as three months left. That didn't suit her, so, in alignment with her stubborn nature and belief in God, she persevered through 19 rounds of chemo, two intense sessions of radiation, and multiple surgeries and hospitalizations.
Throughout FIVE years of some of the most intense medical interventions known to man, she never, not once, wavered in her dedication to her family, to her job and the homeless women veterans and children she guided, and to me and my children. The only thing she ever said, and only if you asked her, through the thick and thin of it all, was that she was 'a little tired.'
Her courage and determination to continue to serve was unmatched, and I can only hope to one day grow up to be as humble and honorable and beloved as Mary. Saying goodbye to her has been the absolute toughest thing I've ever had to do.
In honor of Mary, this Veteran's Day, spend time with a loved one and have a cup of coffee or a diner breakfast if restrictions allow. Mary loved her mama Jimmie more than anything, and always said if she could give anything, she'd give it to have just five more minutes with her. Don't waste a second - hold your loved ones tight every day.
I know I've gone on and on, but thank you to Brenda, Pat, Joyce, and Fred and the rest of her family for being so warm and inclusive. It's been an extended blessing, I got Mary and a big loving family, too. I appreciate the privilege of being included, love you all.
