Obituary of Wayne William Engel
Engel, Wayne
Saginaw, Michigan
Wayne, age 78, passed away Tuesday, November 17, 2020 due to complications of COVID-19. He was born in Saginaw Michigan, on June 1, 1942 to the late William and Vera Engel, and later raised by his stepmother, the late Luella Hill Engel. Wayne married Carole Miller, his Junior High School sweetheart, on April 28, 1962.
Wayne was a small business owner for most of his life. Many fondly remember coming into Engel’s Market in Shields, Michigan for their meat, groceries and supplies. He was very active in the community, with Engel’s Market sponsoring many local sports teams. He especially took pride in being the first employer for many young people in the area. The store closed in 1989, but he continued to be very active in the community.
Wayne was a charter member of the Shields Lions Club and remained an active member for over 56 years until his death. In the Lions Club, he was a long-time organizer of the Shields Homecoming parade and loved parade day. Wayne also served as a Thomas Township Trustee for 16 years, from 1988-2005. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends and walks with his dog.
He leaves behind his beloved wife, Carole; 3 daughters, Tracy (Will) Kramer, Lynn (Ken) Manchester, Kelly (David) Revard; 5 grandchildren, Merritt and Piper Kramer, Alex, Trent and Abby Boylan; and brother in-law, Duke McSweyn. He was preceded in death by his sister, Leota McSweyn.
To honor his wishes, cremation has taken place, and a Celebration of Life will be held in the summer when we can safely gather. In lieu of flowers, those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider Memorial Contributions to the Shields Lions Club or Thomas Township Roethke Park.
