Obituary of Virginia Ann Barc
Virginia Ann Barc passed away peacefully at her home in Tawas Village on December 2, 2020, with Walter, her husband of 71 years, by her side. She was 91 years young.
Virginia was born and raised in Detroit, where she met her husband Walter, who lived down the block.
Virginia had a long and prolific career as an artist. A student of the College for Creative Studies, Virginia found a passion for painting, sculpture and ceramics. She exhibited throughout Michigan, including the Detroit Institute of Arts and a one-person show at the Besser Museum. She was awarded many blue ribbons. She was a co-owner of Gallery 12 in Plymouth, where she curated a rotating exhibit of up and coming artists and was honored with several solo shows of her paintings. After moving to East Tawas, clay became her most-loved medium; she spent hours in her studio throwing pots and developing stunning and unique glazes. She opened The Pot Shop on US 23, where she sold her pottery as well water colors and paintings. Virginia was an active member of the Tawas Bay and Livonia Artists’ Club.
Virginia taught drawing, painting and ceramic classes. She was a passionate and dedicated teacher, using her high energy, quirky sense of humor to nurture her students in their artistic pursuits
One of Virginia’s greatest gifts was her ability to incorporate everyday objects in her art. Every Christmas she gifted a handmade Santa Claus ornament made of items such as tongue depressors, dominoes, pinecones and paddle ball sets to her family and friends. They will be hanging on trees for years to come. Virginia treasured the winter months she spent in Hawaii with Walter. She spoke fondly of days spent on the beach watching Walter body surf, looking for whales, and exploring the volcanic landscapes of Haleakala and Kilauea on bicycle. In addition to her art, Virginia enjoyed her numerous pets, playing the piano, and Vernors.
Virginia is survived by her husband Walter; children, Michele, Mark (Sandy) and Jacquelyn (John); her grandchildren, Kristin and Dane; and her great-grandchild, Zaynah. A memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider a contribution to St Vincent de Paul of Tawas City.
