RICHARD DEVERS posted a condolence

My condolences to Gene's family. My brother Mel Devers was also a metallurgist and he worked with Gene at Malleable Iron (later Central Foundry). Mel was a good friend of Gene. Mel introduced me to Gene and I was glad to know him; I had a lot of respect for both of them.

Our sympathy to Gene's family. We remember Gene as a warm and funny friend at FUMC. Our families shared many experiences including church and camping. I remember Gene driving with his knees, acting like he wasn't steering, to make the kids laugh.

Carla brought Gene into our life, and we loved him. Gene was truly an Eagle Scout throughout his life. He never gave up when serious medical procedures were necessary. He got up and at it as quickly as possible. This allowed us many hours of hiking with Gene and Carla in southern Indiana, Northern Michigan, Nevada, Arizona, and Hawaii. Gene's woodworking/handyman skills are evident in our house—he helped us remodel our house and only took beer as payment. Our little granddaughters are still using the pencil coat rack painted in primary colors that Gene made for them. We enjoyed many conversations and much laughter together. We are going to miss Gene for now, but we'll see him again.
With love,
Alice and Hank Hawkins

Gene was a kind and gentle man who's family meant all the world to him and who valued his friendships. We count ourselves among the lucky ones.
"A lovely life never dies but lives on in the hearts and minds of those who will always remember". Rest In Peace Gene, thinking of you Carla. Much love, Carol and Joe :heavy_heart_exclamation_mark_ornament:

I consider myself very lucky to have had Gene as a brother in law. He was always willing to lend a hand wherever it was needed. Gene was so talented and generous. I look around my home and see pieces of his beautiful craftsmanship and am reminded of his kindness. He was good to people which to me is the best measure of a man's character. He will be missed.

I will never forget the beautiful wood work he did on my childhood rocking chair. My son broke the arm and threw it away, because he was scared he would get into trouble. However, with the master wood working skills of Gene he was able to restore my chair. I am forever grateful.

Carla, we so enjoyed you and Gene when we were traveling on the Grand European cruise two years ago. We were looking forward to being with you on the Alaskan cruise planned for next summer. Gene was a terrific guy, so interesting and such a pleasure to be around. We miss him already. You have our deepest sympathy.
We will be sending a monetary donation to our local Humane Society in his name.

Gene welcomed me to the General Motors team recruiting graduates from Missouri School of Mines about 45 years ago. That started a friendship that continued into both our retirements and following lunches. Gene did all the work and the rest of us took credit for it. Many nights on the road he would talk so fondly about Will and Laura and later Carla. He was so pleased and proud of his family. I always enjoyed and respected being around such a good man. So sorry he is gone and wish only the best memories for all of you.
