Obituary of Harlan Gene Holsing

Harlan Gene Holsing, age 87, passed away Sunday, December 6, 2020. He was born on the family farm in Ipswich, SD on November 14, 1933, the second of ten children, to the late Arthur and Lillian (Simon) Holsing. An exciting childhood accomplishment, was in 1955 when he was a 4H Exchange Student to Pakistan. He married the late Darlene Hottman in 1960 and had 5 children, moving to Bay City in 1973. He served his country by serving stateside in the U. S. Army during Korean War. He later married Elizabeth “Betsy” McGrew Kuizenga on April 5, 1991. He was very involved in the Bay County and Michigan Home Builders Associations, where he was recognized on local, state, and national levels. He had also been awarded Associate of the Year for the United States. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and attending their academic and sporting events, playing cribbage, making unique and silly awards to give his family and friends, canning and making his family-favorite mashed potatoes. Harlan was proud of his recipe for making applesauce each fall with apples given to him from his dear friend Don. He is survived by his children, Karl Holsing, Kurt (Ella) Holsing, Kent (Kathy) Holsing, Kyle Holsing, and Kara (Doug) Greenwalt; grandchildren, Sara, Meghan, and David Holsing, Jordan, Jared, and Jacob Holsing, and Christian Greenwalt; and siblings, Marcene Bruckner, Duane (Arlene) Holsing, Beverly (Wayne) Wright, Larry (Cheryl) Holsing, Carolyn Hieb, Diane (Don) Hoyle, Kathy (Gary) Adam, Sharon (Jim) Engler; and sister-in-law, Margie Holsing. Also surviving are his step-children, Mark (Shelley) Kuizenga, Karolee (Don) Barlett, Kelly Booth, Kraig Kuizenga, Kurk (Tonya) Kuizenga; step-grandchildren, Brian (Jessica) Bartlett, Jeff (Jenny) Bartlett, Kaycee, Cole, and Cody Booth, Olivia and Aliyah Kuizenga, Jonathan (Ashli) Donahue, Ryan (Jenna) Donahue, Kortnee (Caleb) Kuizenga, Kris (Bobbie-Jo) Kuizenga, Kory Kuizenga, Kellie (Sergio) Martin, Brooke (Timmy) McGuire; step great-grandchildren, Ryker and Renlee Donahue, Karter Kimbrue, Kirsten Kuizenga, Mikayla Martin, Weston, Halle-Grace, Ellimay, and Georgia McGuire. He was predeceased by his brother Arnold Holsing, and brothers-in-law, Tony Bruckner and Verl Hieb. A Memorial Service is being planned for the Spring 2021 as well as a service in South Dakota on his brother's farm. In lieu of flowers, those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider Memorial Contributions to the North Euclid Church of God or the charity of the donor’s choice.
